(2) Work on saving a few trees by using less paper

132. No, but he's pretending to be the environmental candidate.
Yes, he's got plenty of worth. By telling us, ironically, how wasting energy has caused greenhouse gasses and the near doom and gloom of the planet. And in that picture he's clearly wasting a lot of energy; at the very least not being conscious about it.

Just like diet food; people can think that eating three times as much diet food as regular food will still be better off. No, it won't. The net usage ends up being the same or even more.

It goes back to the carbon credit analogy - it's like credit cards, and once the interest kicks in the honeymoon ends.

Sometimes a messy office like that is the sign of serious work in progress, other times it means the guy is hopelessly disorganized. But you can give a messy desk the benefit of the doubt. I never trust a clean desk.

28. The frog is a symbol of the devastation of climate change.
Climate Change Devastating Latin American Frogs

Science Daily — A University of Alberta scientist is part of an international research team proving, for the first time, that global warming is behind an infectious disease epidemic wiping out entire frog populations and forcing many species to extinction.
"There is absolutely a linkage between global warming and this disease - they go hand-in-hand," said Arturo Sanchez-Azofeifa, a professor in the U of A's Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences and co-author of a research paper appearing in the current edition of the prestigious journal Nature.
Sanchez-Azofeifa worked with an international research team led by Dr. Alan Pounds from Costa Rica's Monteverde Cloud Forest Preserve and Tropical Science Centre. Accounting for such things as deforestation, the scientists investigated how the Monteverde harlequin frog vanished along with the golden toad 17 years ago from the mountains of Costa Rica. The researcher say about 67 per cent of the 110 species of the harlequin frog, which only existed in the American tropics, have met the same fate due to a pathogenic fungus called Batrachochytrium dendrobatidis.

10. One 30" monitor is enough for me
Maybe Al hasn't heard of tabbed browsing or using Exposé?

I code in CSS/XHTML/Javascript/PHP all day long and always have several windows open. A single 30" monitor is fantastic for this (and using Final Cut).

Of course I've spent the last several years decreasing my energy consumption (my 30" monitor uses less energy than the 22" CRT it replaced, for example).

Hmmmm.

44. Absolutely Agree.
I worked off one coding and designing for most of my life, and while I'd seen other people with setups, I made the same excuses. Recently I got a monitor switch and now have my secondary monitor set up to be a dual monitor but I can press a button and be on my server if I need to do anythign to it.

Working with two monitors is something that once you start it becomes very hard to go back. In fact now I want to get some larger ones, and those 30" ones look nice. ;)

125. Apple has tabbed browsing or allows people to use energy efficiently?
No freakin' way! :wow:

Yes, one 30" LCD uses less energy than one 22" CRT. But Al uses THREE of them. At once. The electricity cost adds up. "Three for just over the price of one" is still using the same amount of energy; maybe Al is answering a question nobody has asked yet*... Add in that TV too that he's not even looking at. Even I, a nobody who doesn't write books on saving energy, know how to turn off things I don't use.

* When people find things that use less or are less, do they not buy more to compensate? Eating 3 low fat hot dogs instead of one big one?

Al's just human. Making money the way we all should be.

The stuff on the desk is "in use" -- he's working on it, or wants it out in view so it will remind him of things he's got to do.

I will say one thing about them: the fact that they got John "Areas of My Expertise" Hodgeman for them is a true coup for Apple.

38. anyone remember the "desk comparison" pics in Biography magazine, fall 2000?
Gore's desk looked just like that -- lots of books, papers, children's artwork, cool gizmos, and interesting rocks, feathers, etc.

Bush's desk was VACANT, except for a couple of slim reports and a baseball!

I've always felt that those pictures were extremely revealing. By the way, my desk looks more like Gore's.

109. You'd be surprised how efficient Macs are.
I got an iMac, and I swear I've never heard a fan run.

Those are mondo Apple Cinema Displays, but they're flat panel, and OSX is really well designed. You can set the displays to shut down after five minutes of inactivity.

When the screens are that big, you can spread full-size documents out all in a row...similar to the messy desk, only he's not using paper.

50. I'd make three changes
First, ditch the damn fax machine. Get a cheap PC--this is a dedicated box, so a PC is fine here--put a fax program, a scanner and a 19" monitor on it, and use that as a fax server. Paperless faxing is Good.

Second, all three of those monitors would be hanging off different Macs if this was my rig.

And third, I'd put the television next to the three Cinema displays.

But other than that, it is a very sweet setup. ('Course, I'd want a few other items--like a 12x18 color laser printer, a PowerFile DVD-ROM jukebox, a 60-inch HP DesignJet 5500 inkjet printer for running seditious posters in small runs, a Nikon slide scanner...)

62. I tried your way
The multiple keyboards and mice make it too cluttered and multiple CPUs consume energy and make the room louder too. The dedicated scan/fax workstation is a good idea. But I'd ditch the TV altogether. With that setup you just need an HDTV receiver and an A/B switcher for one of the displays. I run two displays like that with a VGA TV tuner attached to one. I spend so many hours on the Mac I like having Stewart & Colbert on the other display keeping me company.

I leave it on while working throughout the day - they give you a 4-at-a-time listing of what's coming up so you can be there when something of particular interest comes up but you'd be surprised how good the vids are. I believe they're also available for podcasts if you're into that. There have even been some great political cartoons.

the cold cathode tube that lights the backlight has an average lifespan of 5 years.

Also, can't he turn off the tv set and have it play the audio only? That's what I do, and I'm not a world-renowned "environmentalist". I do lots of environmentally friendly things.

Sheesh, his office is far more a fire hazard than mine will ever be - and I ain't no neatnick.

Al's rich. Buying a proper eyeglasses prescription would allow him to use normal 19" monitors like the rest of us.

http://www.badapplebiz - FACTS on Apple's green history, of which Apple joined their boardi n 2003. If he was arguing against Steve Jobs' disregard for THIS long over environmental waste, I'd have quit by now. But then, the initial iPod battery backlash came from consumers. Not Al Gore. The site says it all and I'm more inclined to believe it at this point.

Sorry to rail on the guy and maybe I'm too much in the opposite direction, but blind love of him is equally misplaced.

If you turn off your TV, doesn't that mean that no sound comes through it? That's the way it works on mine. I often "watch" TV while I work, it's more of a listen, but when something comes up that I know I want to see, I stop what I'm doing and watch it.

If you're "watching" CSPAN, don't you want to take a look sometimes and see who the idiot is that is talking? Or stop and pay close attention to someone who is making a valid argument?

When I'm working I have multiple windows open and putting data in one program after another, plus keeping an eye out for an important email coming in. Three monitors would me so nice instead of resizing windows all the time, as you go from one program to another. At any one time I could easily have 6 programs running at the same time and sometimes taking data from one program to put in another, begs to have at least 2 windows open side by side, especially if you have to type in the data. Data workers know exactly what I mean.

140. I can't believe you people have such a collective crush on this guy
I liked his movie too, but he is a massive hypocrite. He obviously isn't making any effort to reduce his own consumption of energy or his use of paper. By the way, Apple has one of the worst environmental records of any tech company, and there's no indication that Gore has used his position on their board to push for a greener company. Board decisions are usually unanimous against environmental protection.

I can't abide this kind of hero worship. I respect what he's doing as an advocate, but he simply doesn't walk the walk. He's as big a hypocrite as anybody in the Bush Administration, and he has similar ties to Big Business. I hope you all realize that the FReepers are probably laughing pretty hard at you right now.

I don't envy Al Gore's triple-monitor set-up. If it wasn't a requirement at my school, I probably wouldn't even have this computer. Our lifestyle is killing the planet, and Al Gore clearly isn't doing anything to find an alternative. He uses massive amounts of energy at his home, flies in a private jet, goes through reams of paper in his office. I don't see any reason to worship him and I'm not voting for him if he runs for president.

141. It's not about reducing energy use, it is about using clean energy to do
whatever you need to do once you have reduced your energy in ways that still let you have a life. They are putting solar panels on their home, own the most efficient appliances, have a solar water heater, have insulated to the hilt... They drive hybrid cars and he travels on regular airplanes with regular people instead of buying or chartering his own plane to save energy.

We do not need to get rid of our computers - we need to make them out of materials that aren't toxic, build them to last a long, long time, and we need to power them with the sun and wind and water energy.

If the Freepers are laughing pretty hard at us -- then they don't understand what he is advocating either. Do you really want people to buy into Freeper logic: "We either live comfortably and continue to spew out pollutants or we have to give up everything we enjoy now and go back to living in caves?" That is a false dichotomy and it is a huge part of the problem we are having right now having a national/international conversation.

We have EVERYTHING we need right now - in terms of technology - to continue to live comfortably and reduce carbon emissions by 90% by 2030. All we need is the will -- spend money on greening our nation and our planet instead of on the military.

149. You make a good point about doing what needs to get done
It's an easy soundbite that Gore uses 20 times as much energy as the average American, but it's more complicated than that. If he has a staff of 15 people on that farm all helping him to work against global warming, then the energy is well spent. If, as I suspect, he is consuming that energy for his personal use, there is no justification being even more wasteful than the average person.

On second thought, I think I have heard that Gore uses commercial airliners. Nancy Pelosi is the one who takes criticism for her private jet. That was a mistake on my part.

I also agree that the "Wasteful 21st Century vs. Green Stone-Age" is a false dichotomy, but I don't think it's possible to have it both ways. In my view, we need to combine lifestyle changes and alternative energy sources to hash out a sort of middle way. The current paradigm of middle-class American life is just not sustainable, even with innovations in solar, wind, and nuclear energy, considering that growing numbers of people in China and India (combined population 8 times that of the U.S.) are trying to achieve the same lifestyle.

146. Gore has been an important advocate, but you do make some valid points.
If he "walked the walk," he'd be an even stronger advocate.

Another thing I disagree with Gore about is his refusual to acknowledge that the only way to address global warming is to use renewables, alternatives, conservation, AND nuclear energy, at least in the near term. It's a blind spot of his, and sadly it diminishes his integrity on his global warming crusade.

151. I'm curious
Do you expect Al Gore to be an internationally renowned activist and speaker by writing only on a portable chalkboard, riding a bicycle around, and wearing hemp clothing? The man is a prominent figure and needs to be able to get around quickly. He also needs to be taken seriously by the business and mainstream crowds. Do you have any idea what his schedule is probably like? He travels more in a month than most of us do in a lifetime. The man needs a private jet to get around. He is a former vice president for Christ's sake. Do you think he can just hop on a passenger plane like the rest of us can? Sure, after the secret service searches it for bombs and frisks all of the passengers to see if they pose any danger to him. Yeah, I'm sure all the other passengers would love that. Oh excuse me, according to you, he can't fly, I forgot. If he does, he's a hypocrite. Maybe he could just take trains around? Oh well, he'd have to go through all of the same things there, and he wouldn't be able to get to any of his many meetings in time. But hey, I guess as long as he's living up to your standards, that's what's really important, right? Who cares if we lose one of the most prominent figures and spokesmen we have in the fight against global warming because he can't travel anymore or use lots of paper or run three computer screens at once? What's far more important is that Al Gore give up what is ultimately a small carbon footprint in the grand scheme of global warming so that he can wear deerskin and live in a tree because it makes you happy. Yeah, people are sure to take him seriously then.

:eyes:

Al Gore has done more to raise the issue of global warming than anybody else on the planet, hands down. Now, answer me honestly, do you really think he could have done this by giving up all of his computers and his jet and turning himself into some fucking live-off-the-land hippie? Do you really? The answer to global warming isn't going to come from us giving up our cars and our computers and returning to a primitive state. That is not going to happen, so get that idea out of your mind. Humans are not going to go back to the stone age. End of story. The answer is alternative fuels, alternative power, alternative resources, increased recycling, and a serious, global effort to slow down the massive population boom that is straining our resources. And if Al Gore has to run a mother fucking thousand computer screens to get this message out to people all from the comfort of a private jet, then he will have my complete support. And he should have yours too.

Jesus would be crucified by some people here if he ran as a Democrat, because some way or another they'd point out that he's a hypocrite in whatever aspect of his life.

171. Thanks for the info
But the first two articles contradict each other. The first says that Apple's green efforts were in the pipeline before they became a target of environmental acivists, and the second says that their current and future programs are in response to this criticism. Do you know which one is right?
