Big Brother just got bigger.
Spy-der web of security
Camera system expanded to subways

By TOM NAMAKO and JOHN DOYLE

The city's live-feed, anti-terror, anti-crime surveillance-camera system that has its eyes on every corner of lower Manhattan and Midtown is now trained on the city's largest subway stops, too -- and for the first time performing high-tech functions such as alerting authorities when bags are left unattended, officials said yesterday.

About 500 of the cameras were turned on for the first time yesterday inside the Times Square, Penn Station and Grand Central subway stops, keeping an eye on stairwells, platforms and

"We can program the system to alert us when a bag is left unattended, when a car drives against the flow of traffic or when a person walks into a restricted area," said Police Commissioner Ray Kelly at a press conference touting the system.

He said the camera-computer setup can even be programmed to quickly sift through footage in search of a specific object, such a suspicious person in certain clothing.

1. Overload the system,
Get about a thousand people to leave an unattended bag in Penn Station on a staggered schedule. I imagine that after about a week or so that security system would go down.

2. I have no problem with security cameras in subway stations.
Particularly late at night, when muggers etc feel emboldened because no one else is around.

6. How many crimes are solved by security cameras? And, yes,
running a red light in NC is an offense that its easily controlled with cameras and the income from the tickets pays for it.

I don't have a problem with people wanting to feel secure, even if it is just a few cameras. Your city depends on tourism. If I don't feel safe in you city I won't visit. Understand?

7. My city does not "depend" on tourism...
...although y'all are certainly welcome here.
Putting money into schools does a hell of a lot more for crime than security cameras ever will.
But the companies that sell security cameras are not interested in educating youngsters or preventing crime, because that would cut into their profits.

8. School money doesn't matter unless the home emphasizes
education. Keeping criminals off the street is invaluable and helps all.

5. Operation Information Overload. Morans.
The more safe they tell us we are, the less safe we are.

But, as long as the corporations making these systems are raking in Government $$$$, I guess it's all good.
