Do you have a job right now? (NOT retired)?
I'm just wondering how many people here are currently unemployed and actually looking for, but can't find, a job.

7. I work for a law firm that does civil litigation.
The money we get from hourly billing goes to the rent of office space and office equipment and other expenses. Most of the money is prospective, meaning contingency only if we win or get a settlement, and nothing is expected anytime soon. Plus the firm lost $300,000 when the office manager embezzled that amount three years ago and we're still recovering and trying to survive from the loss.

3. I retired to take my current job.
When I left my former university for this one, they asked whether I wished to resign or retire. I found that the latter had big monetary advantages, and so I retired from that university.

5. I have a new freelance job, I think
I still haven't been paid anything, and there hasn't been much to do... but I think I might sort of be on a payroll.

6. That would be me
I'm 48. Normally I'd be considered mid career or on the way to just topping out at the height of my profession (IT). I've been laid off three different times since 2002.

Yeah, I AM SICK OF IT. Thanks for asking.

I know more school is in my future. It's a matter of what. I am considering either culinary school (running my own food company) OR Physician Assistant school. Ideally, I'd do both the food company and phys assist school.

8. No job
I'm technically still in graduate school, and I'm finishing up my internship. Nothing certain in my future, though I'm waiting on the edge of my seat to hear back from AmeriCorps. Their 11,500 annual stipend is, sadly, a better deal than most entry-level jobs in my field at the moment.

9. Unemployed since February
I've picked up a couple of temporary things, but that's about it. I apply every week for every new job I see posted, and usually don't even get a call back on the resumes I send out.

10. Here. Age 60, 18mos w/o job, now w/o health insurance.
STILL LOOKING every f'ing day. I'm overqualified for entry level stuff, which I would gladly take but they won't hear of it.

15. Yes. It pays less than it should though.
Sign of the times. I am glad to have it though, and the minimal benefits that come along with it.

future a really great paying job (for me at least) is on the way!

19. Short contract; ending in a week or two
Other than that and some other short-term contracts, I've been unemployed for 16 months.

I'm looking constantly, but I'll be 67 next month, so the odds are increasingly against my finding another permanent job in my field.

i have told myself i am freelancing...but the 'client' list is down to one and she hasn't given me enough to invoice her for over a month...

so i am on tanf, foodstamps, and required to do 32 hours of 'jobrelated' activity a week...so i'm jobsearching, which is a total farce. I have been throwing resumes from sacramento to reno, and there are jobs asking for a BA that are only offering $12...NOT a living wage at all.

so we are just holding on to the threads of existence, no money for the kids bookfairs, walkathons, etc... i hate to have to tell them we can;t afford things, but i have to be honest too...

and today i am looking at the futility of it all and thinking no wonder i am depressed...
