Jerry Garcia's California home for sale for $4 million

http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20100920/ap_en_mu/us_jerry_garcia_s_house

NICASIO, Calif. – Would-be home buyers now have a chance to taste the high life, Grateful Dead-style: Jerry Garcia's house is for sale.

The 11-acre estate in rural Marin County, north of San Francisco, was the bandleader's last home before he died of a heart attack in 1995 at age 53.

The sellers are asking just shy of $4 million for the 7,000-square-foot Mediterranean-style home and surrounding grounds.

The real estate listing describes amenities such as a 1,500-square-foot artist's studio, a solar-heated pool and an organic garden. The estate has 300-degree views that span the Berkeley skyline to the Pacific Ocean.

In recent years, a man who bought the house and renovated it shortly after Garcia's death sold many of the fixtures — including the guitarist's toilet — to raise money for charity.

10. I lived in San Rafael for a while, while it was still funky. Now it's totally yuppified.
I miss it- what a beautiful, cool place. My digs weren't anything like THAT, though!

3. damn, the studio alone is bigger than my whole house....
Wow. Not exactly where I pictured Jerry living. Not that he didn't earn the right to live wherever he wanted-- I just never thought he was the sort to go for mansions.

8. Jesus Christ. Fuck capitalism.
I knew it was a money machine, but had some naive thoughts about the members of the Dead.

Now I am not naive. Now I can simply say it was a money machine.

9. Oh, for fuck's sake.
Yes, people shouldn't ever make money off their creativity , talent, or art.

:eyes:

I bought tickets to a lot of Dead shows, in the day. I can honestly say that, aggregate, I got way more than my money's worth.

You know, Salvador Dali was rich, too.

13. Well, that and the "tapers section"...
...it was only in the later years, when the band realized they were letting people freely record and trade their live shows but some people decided to make a buck off of it that they decided to block the availability of soundboard-quality tape trading.

Yeah, they all drove off with truckloads of money. But they also earned it.

16. No need to radicalize my emotional expression. I acknowledged that I already knew
it was a money machine (the Dead merchandising/tour business) and am non-judgmental about that. However, I am judgmental of this enormous mansion. It casts a shadow over an erroneously developed perception I had of the man, Garcia. My fault for conceiving an image of a person I had no first hand interactions with.

18. I knew hippies who thought he had to spend all his time eating macrobiotic grains and tofu
They were gravely shocked to learn he subsided on twinkies and burgers.

27. I don't think your example has any bearing on my misperception.
Also, I do not think you knew any hippies who thought he "had to" eat macrobiotically.

And I supported him, I have all his albums, attended his concerts.

LOL-- Castles in the air. That is a lotta gorgeous.

Bless Jerry Garcia -- he left this Earth too soon, after working hard and sharing his talents generously. I hope he enjoyed the fruits of his labors while he was here.
