Selby school cancels outside break in row over noise
http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-york-north-yorkshire-11340226

"Children at a school near Selby have had a play break cancelled and hard ball games banned after neighbours complained to the council about noise.

Barlby Community Primary School has also put up a soundproof fence because it fears a noise abatement order.

The school said the decisions were "regrettable" but necessary to prevent the chance of a notice being served.

Some parents are unhappy about the move, which was also criticised by the organisation Play England.

WTF? Seriously? Ugh. :argh:

I know this is the UK, but will this sort of thing stay in the UK? Yeah, I probably sound hysterical, but kids do benefit from play.

1. I think it depends on who was there first?
If the school is new, then I can see the point of the homeowners, but if the school has been there for some time and newer homeowners are complaining, then they need to STFU.

Its like buying a home near the airport then complaining about the noise. WTF?

3. According to the article, it sounds like the school has been there quite a while.
But, I'm not sure it should matter. If a new school is approved by the community for a spot in the community, then the community has chosen a place where kids will play, and thus make noise. Further, they are playing during daylight hours, not late in the night. If we can't provide a place for kids to play, then we're failing, IMO.

22. i'd bet it's new development. uk had their own suburban building boom that
"developed" many villages up to their eyes.

23. Do you think it's a new development around the school, or a new development and school together?

Thanks.

2. Don't think it will
come to that in the US. I say this (as best I can remember)because of a number of cases where farmland was sold to developers who built townhouses right next to a working farm. The NEW residents complained of the odor and sought to sue the farms to stop making the offensive odor. Judge decided the farm was there first and that it was the normal operation of a farm, so use a clothes-pin on your nose or move.

6. Seriously?
Who complains about kids playing outside for a few hours a day? I doubt they're having low-rider competitions, and trying to blow out windshields with bass amps.

7. Indeed.
I'd love to know how many of those complaining use their cell phones in inappropriate situations. Something tells me that such individuals are likely to be classic hypocrites.

8. Some grumpy old fart doesn't like the sound of school children
Move that old fart next to an airport or railroad tracks.

They are kids, they make noise, it's when they are quiet you have something to worry about.

9. A little birdie just informed me that "noise is never permissible" ...
... because some people sleep during the day.

What sort of world would that be?

19. My hubby was a third shifter, slept during the day, he learned to adjust. We knew
the school was there when we moved in.

14. Somebody needs to move, and IMO it's not the school. Kids' play is natural, and
eliminating recess and restricting PE IMO does far more social harm than any noise they might ever make.

16. Shit, I live right at the end of the football/track field. On Saturday mornings
during track season there is NO sleeping in and on Friday nights during football season we can't even carry on a conversation in normal tones because of the PA system. When it's still warm enough to have windows open we usually just make it a point to be some where else for a couple hours.

17. We live a block and a half from a high school.
So we hear the marching band practicing early in the morning, something I'm actually fond of, so I guess that's not a good example. Anyway, the school was there long before we bought our house, so we knew the pluses and the minuses, including the kids taking up all available street parking, smoking pot in front of the house now and then (which is really only embarrassing for them, once they notice I'm sitting on my porch), playing music too loud sometimes, but it is what it is. The kids are a part of the community, and, sure, once or twice in 12 years I've had to go outside and ask them to take the post football game celebration elsewhere, after being awakened at midnight. That's life. In general, the kids are respectful and just do their thing. If we live in communities, there will always be a give and take that will lead to minor inconveniences for some of us at some times. Life goes on, and it's quite wonderful!
