Unemployment rises in 27 states last month
WASHINGTON — More than half of U.S. states saw their unemployment rates rise in August, the largest number in six months, as hiring weakened across the country.

The jobless rate increased in 27 states last month, the Labor Department said Tuesday. It fell in 13 and was unchanged in 10 states and Washington, D.C. That's worse than the previous month, when the rate increased in only 14 states and fell in 18. It's also the most states to see an increase since February.

The report also shows that some regions of the country are recovering faster than others.

Western states, struggling with a beleaguered housing sector, are losing jobs and reporting higher unemployment rates. Northeastern states, meanwhile, are posting job gains in areas such as finance and hotels and restaurants.

California, Arizona, Nevada and Colorado shed jobs in August and their unemployment rates rose. At the same time, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Rhode Island and New Jersey added jobs and reported lower unemployment rates. ..........(more)

2. Didn't they hear that the recession is over and has been over since 2009.
Happy days are here again.

Oh except for the unemployed. They don't matter anyway. Just ask Congress about those 99ers.

10. "State settles for luring low-wage jobs"

It fucking sucks in North Carolina. And Burr (R) leads Marshall (D) by a healthy margin:

Obama and the Dems should have been doing MUCH more about jobs creation; we'll find out on November 2 whether others agree.

11. I agree with your last sentence.....
Not looking very pretty here in our Governor's race:

"Poll: Strickland 17 points behind Kasich in governor's race"

September 19, 2010

Columbus -- Gov. Ted Strickland is trailing his Republican challenger by 17 percentage points, according to a new survey of likely voters.

The Quinnipiac University Polling Institute put John Kasich ahead of the state's top Democrat by a margin of 54 percent to 37 percent. And 85 percent of those polled said they have their minds made up and won't be switching candidates before election day.

"Ohio is not an island," Peter A. Brown, assistant director of the polling institute, said in a released statement. "Clearly, Kasich is benefiting from the national anti-incumbent, anti-Democratic wave, which seems to be sweeping the country."

Brown called Ohio "the most important swing state in the country," adding "If Kasich were to lead a Republican sweep in Ohio, it would be a good indication that the Republican landslide many are predicting nationally might come to fruition."

Connecticut-based Quinnipiac regularly gauges Ohioans' views on candidates and issues.

From Sept. 9 through the day of Strickland and Kasich's first debate Sept. 14, the institute questioned 730 likely voters in the state.

Among the results:

* Respondents disapprove of the job Strickland is doing as governor, 59 percent to 34 percent.

* Fifty-five percent of those surveyed believe Kasich will do a better job rebuilding the state's economy, and 54 percent said he would do a better job handling the state budget.

* A total of 77 percent of voters said they were either "somewhat dissatisfied" or "very dissatisfied" with the way things are going in Ohio.

"In bad times, governors and presidents pay the political price, and since Barack Obama is not on the ballot this year, Ted Strickland is the focus of unhappy Ohioans," Brown said.

Local polls here show about the same, sadly.

12. Pennsylvania (my home state) makes me nervous, too.
Pennsylvania: Toomey Continues to Lead Sestak in Poll
http://www.rollcall.com/issues/56_25/atr/49874-1.html

"GOP hopeful Pat Toomey holds an 8-point lead over Democratic Rep. Joe Sestak in the battle for Pennsylvania’s open Senate seat, according to polling released Wednesday morning by Rasmussen Reports."

This entire financial meltdown could have been avoided, and that so many un- and underemployed Americans are struggling truly saddens me. I just don't see any urgency with jobs creation, and that pisses me off to no end.

13. Not surprising, actually
Seasonal summer employment winds down.

You should start seeing a seasonal uptick in a few weeks as retailers, inbound order call center, and delivery companies start seasonal hiring in advance of the holidays.
