Plan would allow some Georgia colleges to ban undocumented students
from the Atlanta Journal-Constitution:

Illegal immigrants would be barred from attending the University of Georgia, Georgia Tech and any other public college that doesn’t have the space to admit all academically qualified applicants, under a recommendation a state committee approved Tuesday.

The committee assembled by the State Board of Regents also recommended that all Georgia colleges verify every admitted student seeking in-state tuition to determine if the student is in the country legally. Illegal immigrants are not eligible for in-state tuition.

The regents are scheduled to vote on the suggested policy changes next month. If approved, the changes would be in effect with applications for the fall 2011 semester.

"We find ourselves in debate over a very, very insignificant number of students," said Regent Jim Jolly, who chairs the committee. "But we recognize this is not an insignificant issue. It is a political and emotional issue and I think we have made good progress in addressing the concerns out there."

Sen. Don Balfour, R-Snellville, said there is more that the regents should do. Balfour and other Georgia lawmakers have said a new law will be introduced to bar illegal immigrants from all public colleges. ..........(more)

1. This is a HUGE problem in our state
0.16 percent of the students on the 35 campuses making up the University System of Georgia are classified as undocumented. So, as you can see, Georgia's classrooms are just crawling with "illegals." That's 16 undocumented students out of every 10,000, folks. Obviously Senator Balfour from Snayellveeyul has his priorities straight. :silly:

2. My school had fewer, that they knew of.
When the regents, in complying with state law, decreed illegal immigrants weren't allowed to attend as of a certain date and that the campuses should take the necessary steps to ensure that no illegal immigrants that were identifiably illegally present in the country were enrolled the chancellor decided to do just that.

He ordered the administrators to check the files and identify any students whose files indicated--obviously mistakenly--that they weren't in the country legally. The administrators then sat down with students to figure out what happened to allow such an egregious error to persist in their files and the steps required to rectify the patently false impression.

35,000 students were in attendance, but when the administrators were done correcting what could only have been administrative errors the result was that not one illegal immigrant could be found attending that school. This was a miracle, since just months before some deluded, benighted students had spoken to the press and said that they, in fact, were illegal immigrants and would be forced to give up their dreams of a college education as a result of the bigoted, hateful state proposition. When this was pointed out the response was that the students concerned were obviously engaged in hyperbole for purely PR purposes or had made false confessions based upon a misunderstanding of their own status.

3. Wow
That is probably the case here as well. For example, I'm sure some kids thought they would be declared ineligible because their parents were undocumented.

Of course, if the teagaggers get control, they'll try to make anybody whose parents weren't U.S. citizens when the kid was born instantly an "illegal" worthy of deportation.

Gee, I wonder how far back that goes? I mean, if -- for example -- my great-great-grandparents weren't born in the U.S. (which happens to be true of one of my ancestors), wouldn't that mean that each successive generation would have to be declared "illegal"?? There's just no end to the labyrinthine logic of the Teahadists!
