September 30th is Blasphemy Day!!! How will you celebrate!!!
Edited on Tue Sep-21-10 09:46 PM by backscatter712
OK, it's guaranteed to offend, well, everyone. But it's offense with a purpose.

September 30th is Blasphemy Day. Here in the U.S. with the First Amendment, we have the right to be as offensive as we like. Draw pictures of Mohammed, burn Korans, burn Bibles, celebrate Jesus On A Stick Day followed by Zombie Jesus Day three days later, eat sacred cow-burgers. How about pictures of pregnant nuns? Pick a religion, pick a way to make offense. It's legal. And even though it pisses people off, it should be legal. Otherwise, our essential freedoms are pissed away.

It's not legal in lots of places in the world. In the UK, they banned the ad showing a pregnant nun eating ice cream with the caption "Immaculately Conceived" - because it was blasphemous. Say anything bad about the prophet Mohammed in Saudi Arabia and you could get stoned to death. In lots of places in the world, saying snarky things about imaginary deities can get you thrown in prison or worse...

A few people in my Free Thought group on campus suggested serving communion wafers with a side of guacamole, with the sign "Turn Jesus Into Poo!" Mmmmmm, sacrilicious! We may yet reject that one on account of not wanting to be lynched. I suppose that's the point of Blasphemy Day - We shouldn't have to worry about being lynched...

So, how are you observing Blasphemy Day?

2. I stand behind your right to revel in such a day, me myself I will use my rights
to decline any involvement to umm celebrate what I can do any day of the year if I so choose, the fact is if I find someone offensive I have no desire to wait until sept 30th each year to let them know it...

But enjoy..and I'll kick it for you, and be thankful that we live in such a country still and hopefully will always, perhaps some might feel so inclined to be made aware so here's your kick...

12. In my world., every day is Blasphemy Day!
:woohoo:

I posted this earlier, but what the hey. Courtesy of XTC:

Dear God,
Don't know if you noticed,
But your name is on a lot of quotes in this book.
Us crazy humans wrote it, you should take a look,
And all the people that you made in your image,
Still believing that junk is true.
Well I know it ain't and so do you,
Dear God,
I can't believe in,
I don't believe in,
I won't believe in heaven and hell.
No saints, no sinners,
No Devil as well.
No pearly gates, no thorny crown.
You're always letting us humans down.
The wars you bring, the babes you drown.
Those lost at sea and never found,
And it's the same the whole world 'round.
The hurt I see helps to compound,
that the Father, Son and Holy Ghost,
Is just somebody's unholy hoax,
And if you're up there you'll perceive,
That my heart's here upon my sleeve.
If there's one thing I don't believe in...

It's you,
Dear God.

16. Well, with a name like mine, pretty much every day is blasphemy day.
There is a real good reason why I don't talk much about my opinions on religion or post in the Religion and Theology forum; I would have been tombstoned long ago.

In my own little way, every day is blasphemy day.

Anything, and I mean ANYTHING that annoys, disturbs, pisses off and otherwise makes uncomfortable people with deeply held theocratic convictions is quite alright with me.

Of course I DO see the irony of calling myself a "heretic" and at the same time not talking very much about heresy on DU. But I learned my lesson in that regard long ago. Not to mention I've had all the conversations and arguments dozens of times before.

31. Secularist Schism Widens, Threatening a Movement's Finances -- and Future? (Politics Daily)
<2010/06/12>
For decades ... Paul Kurtz and the secular humanist movement that he birthed in the 1970s represented the gravitational center of unbelief in America ... But now Paul Kurtz is gone from the Center for Inquiry (CFI) and its affiliated publications and organizations, resigning last month after losing a lengthy power struggle with CFI's board of directors, and the movement he leaves behind isn't looking too good either ... Yet to many the split also underscores a serious and widening schism in the broader community of non-believers, between those who want civil engagement with people of faith, and even cooperation where possible, and atheist "fundamentalists" (as Kurtz and the old guard call them) -- true believers in godlessness who belittle religion and religious people at every turn ... "What has happened is that there is increasingly an effort to focus on criticism of religion," Kurtz told me. "Although we" -- he was referring to secular humanists like himself, who hold varying opinions on the supernatural -- "are skeptical of religion, we nonetheless have a positive statement to make. We want to work with religious people solving our planetary problems. This represents a basic philosophical difference" ... http://www.politicsdaily.com/2010/06/12/secularist-schism-widens-threatening-a-movements-finances-a/

A Bitter Rift Divides Atheists
by BARBARA BRADLEY HAGERTY
October 19, 2009
... Paul Kurtz founded the Center for Inquiry three decades ago to offer a positive alternative to religion. He has built alliances with religious groups over issues such as climate change and opposing creationism in the public schools. Kurtz says he was ousted in a "palace coup" last year — and he worries the new atheists will set the movement back. "I consider them atheist fundamentalists," he says. "They're anti-religious, and they're mean-spirited, unfortunately. Now, they're very good atheists and very dedicated people who do not believe in God. But you have this aggressive and militant phase of atheism, and that does more damage than good" ... http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=113889251

You cannot mock my 'beliefs' because I don't have any, at least as far as sky fairies are concerned. That's what it means to be an atheist. No supernatural belief system.

I guess in many quarters, it's not a problem to force your opinions down the throats of other people while being offended by the same. I imagine we often hold ourselves to much lesser standards than we others to.

Six of one, half a dozen of the other (unless the "other" is our own personal sacred cow...)

And those that don't have one has a gay bath house next to a grade school. Christians are so oppressed! The horrors of being 80% of the population!:scared:

Again... You are just not getting the concept. Atheists have no sacred cows. Nothing is sacred, because there are no gods to make them sacred.
