The basic axiom of American politics is: Nobody really gives a fug what you think.
A first consequence of this axiom is: There will always be lots and lots of noise about what he thinks and what she thinks and what they think, and all this noise will be pointless

The focus on what everybody thinks is actually a diversion: it encourages people to waste time refining their opinions, and arguing about their opinions, and so it keeps lots and lots of people busy doing pointless stuff, which allows the status quo to roll along its trajectory without any real challenge

A second consequence of the axiom is: People quickly become discouraged and burn out, because the pointless noise about opinions hardly ever accomplishes anything -- and this burn out again allows the status quo to roll along its trajectory without any real challenge

The actual rules of practical politics are simple: (1) Know what concrete result you want; (2) Figure out how to organize real pressure to get what you want; (3) Apply that pressure; (4) If applying the pressure doesn't work, try to figure out what you did wrong, and apply pressure again -- and if that doesn't work, figure out what you did wrong, and apply pressure some more

Face it: Nobody really gives a fug what you think. They will, however, run out of the way if you start driving a steamroller towards them
