NC DU'ers, I have a note of concern in the David Redwine flyers
Edited on Wed Sep-22-10 09:53 AM by mmonk
and the NC Democratic Party paying for them. The flyer says "Bringing the Arizona immigration crack down to North Carolina". I have sent an email to Executive Director of our party Andrew Whalen for a detailed response on his take. I plan to run with a story and am giving him a chance at his explanation. The flyer starts ok with an indicated desire to crack down on employers. But with the previous line I mentioned, the Arizona law deals with much more and was written by people of dubious character that I do not think NC Democrats want to be associated with in any manner. Just giving you a heads up.

1. Do you have a copy of the flyer?
Edited on Wed Sep-22-10 11:21 AM by supernova
I'm not in his (sought) district so I didn't get it.

It sounds odd to me that a Dem would propose something as asinine and dangerous as the AZ law.

3. I contacted Rob Christensen at the N&O and he said yes, Arizona
specifically named. So I searched further thinking a right wing think tank might have it and behold, they do (my old adversary the Civitas Institute). Here is one side of the flyer (click on it to expand it). I'm waiting for a response from Andrew Whalen.

2. No Democrat--self-respecting or not, should be associated with AZ SB 1070.
Edited on Wed Sep-22-10 11:27 AM by blondeatlast
It's unConstitutional and blatantly discriminatory.

As the poster above said, if possible, please show us the flyer--this is an inexcusable position for a Democrat to take.

4. tTere is no denying the fact that the flyer will trigger the thought of AZ SB 1070
in voter's minds even if that is not the intent (but in a senaky way, I bet they are counting on that).

15. Yes, that is the problem I think.
Any mention of Arizona and immigration naturally conjures up SB 1070.

5. Well, not all Democrats are starry-eyed supporters of illegal immigration.
I do not see this as a negative.

11. I think the argument against this type law does not have anything to do with
"supporting" illegal immigration-it's that basically an American person can be detained without just cause because they "look" like they might be illegal. Fair skinned folks don't have to worry about it much. There are laws against kidnapping people and detaining them. Everything I've learned about this law makes me feel there are too many ways it can be abused to let it go unchallanged.

16. Thank you for that article, BaL
That's exactly what I feared when I read that blurb on the flyer, a Chandler style roundup, complete with all the mess and hatred to go with it.

17. Another way to pit communities against each other. That's how the haters manage
to get votes...except for the ones they steal, of course. You live in Phoenix...what do you think about all this?

21. I think it's a clever way to sneak the hate into NC. The bastard is NOT specifically saying
SB 1070--but I bet he's counting on voters to make that connection.

And something tells me he won't loudly disavow the connection, either.

20. I don't know anyone around here
in the Dem Party who would agree with it.

Redwine should get scorched by his own for this.

13. Here's something about your starry eyed insult.
One can be for legal immigration control without it being connected to the Arizona law and the noted racist organizations involved in crafting it. If that was left off of the flyer, there wouldn't be a controversy.

6. It appears Redwine is a Blue Dog who is hoping
to get more Repub voters. :-(

Just on a quick Google search:

He's on the board of ECU Board of Trustees
Insurance Broker by trade. (I don't know any of them who are progressive. Not saying there aren't any, but they must be very rare birds, indeed.)

8. N&O: Democrat calls for Arizona-style immigration law
The North Carolina Democratic Party is paying for a mailer in a state Senate race that calls for “bringing the Arizona immigration crackdown to North Carolina.”

The mailer was sent on behalf of Senate candidate David Redwine of Shallotte who is in a hot campaign with Republican Bill Rabon of Southport for the seat held by retiring Sen. R.C. Soles.

Andrew Whalen, executive director of the state Democratic Party, said the mailing reflected the views of Redwine, not the party, reports Rob Christensen.

“I think the mail piece specifically is a plank in David Redwine's platform on which he is running for the Senate,” Whalen said. “There are many viewpoints and many different candidates in the Democratic Party.”

So, we paid for the mailer, but it's a plank of Redwine's not the party's. This should cause a shitstorm of major proportions. :grr: :grr: :grr:

Got there through tags, hope this link works: http://projects.newsobserver.com/taxonomy/term/1,3771,9860 Let me now if it doesn't.

10. It's rather clever, because AZ has MANY laws dealing with immigration
(of course, we shouldn't--it's the Fed's job) but the strategists know exactly what's going to be triggered in voter's minds (AZ SB 1070).

If anti-"other folk" fever has infected your state from mine, I extend my heartfelt sympathy and apologies.

9. David Redwine to run for state senate - Cape Fear Watchdogs
This article is from February of this year.

Redwine, also a Democrat, said he would run on a platform promoting “responsible spending and strengthening our economy with jobs, education, and building a solid transportation structure.”

He joins two Republicans, Pender County resident and former StarNews reporter Bettie Fennell – who challenged Soles in 2008 – and Brunswick County veterinarian Bill Rabon, as candidates for the soon-to-be-vacant seat.
....

But Brunswick County has changed since Redwine lost his seat to Bonner Stiller in 2002, becoming more Republican and conservative as it has grown.

And the mood of the country right now is notably moving in the Republican’s direction, highlighted by the Democrat’s recent loss of the U.S. Senate seat in Massachusetts held by Ted Kennedy for decades.

http://watchdogs.blogs.starnewsonline.com/11173/david-redwine-to-run-for-state-senate/

Yuk! Anybody live in Brunswick Co can verify this?
