Big health insurers to stop selling new child-only policies

Major health insurance companies in California and other states have decided to stop selling policies for children rather than comply with a new federal healthcare law that bars them from rejecting youngsters with preexisting medical conditions.

Anthem Blue Cross, Aetna Inc. and others will halt new child-only policies in California, Illinois, Florida, Connecticut and elsewhere as early as Thursday when provisions of the nation's new healthcare law take effect, including a requirement that insurers cover children under age 19 regardless of their health histories.

The action will apply only to new coverage sought for children and not to existing child-only plans, family policies or insurance provided to youngsters through their parents' employers. An estimated 80,000 California children currently without insurance — and as many as 500,000 nationwide — would be affected, according to experts.

Can't wait to see what they will do next and the worse part is the way they will spin it to say they had no choice but to do this because it is the only way they can survive. My hope is that all this Tea-party-stage shows did open the eyes of some conservatives in this country who now realize what a racket the insurance business is and won't fall for the talking points.

I have said this from day one. California passed basically the same laws (without mandates) in the early 90's. The Insurance Industry helped to write that legislation too and I saw first hand how they used loop holes (they installed) to get around the pre-existing condition clause and use the 'Fair Claims Practice Act' to their advantage. Many stated that, now it would be federal law and somehow that magically would change the outcome. It doesn't make a difference whether it is state or federal they will use those loopholes and those who need access to health care will still be denied.

5. because the hcr bill did not include monetary penalties for the Insurance Industry.
The only penalty, was maybe being barred from the exchange (an exchange that is not yet in place).

12. The insurance companies
Aren't the ones who voted for it.

They certainly didn't sign it into law.

This was a crappy bill that has created more problems than it purports to solve.

6. Considering the "complexity" and authorship of this massive rip-off,
I'm not sure that found is the proper verb.

10. Private insurers will not be socially conscious, or even care
That's an expected response - just don't insure children.

These companies are pure profit generators. That's why they can't be the "middle-man" in any national health
policy. There will be much more of this over the years unless we go to a truly national health program with
the government as the payer.

13. No one can FORCE an insurance company to offer coverage
Anyone living in Hurricane Alley knows how it works. They raise the rates until it reaches a level that is impossible for people to pay, and then they just exit-stage left and quit offering homeowners' policies in states/areas where they are exposed to risk.

I knew from the get-go, that insurance reform would never really happen, because they retained the pricing/coverage mechanism.

The keyword in all the speeches was "offer".. Insurors may offer coverage, but at a price that is unaffordable. They are off the hook because who gets to define "affordable"? but they did offer:evilgrin:..and if it's unaffordable, and few participate or indicate that they will, as a business, the insurors can just decide that the offered coverage is not worth their bother..and then just withdraw it altogether.

A buffet is an "offering", but if you have no money, you will not eat.

14. Seems to me that California has the golden opportunity
to make a non-profit Medicare like plan for children to be sold and administered by the state, since the insurers don't want to. It could be the foot in the door we need to get a statewide single payer system started here. Surely, Arnold won't veto a health plan for children will he? He has vetoed our last two efforts to get single payer health to Californians, but the children?
