1. Actually I will vote in October
I will be traveling out of the country during the election and have to vote early.

But if I am breathing and there is an election, I am voting. It is my civic duty!

A teen or a convict or a left leaning green card holder?

I get what you likely mean, but the knee-jerk reductionism on DU has been driving me crazy the last few months. Language MEANS, so let's be careful out there.

48. Grammatically yes, linguistically no
"Cannot vote" is a condition that necessitates "does not vote," but saying "does not vote" by itself doesn't meaningfully exclude the category .

Clearly this distinction is important. My first reaction to the comment (and I am 36) was akin to "whoa, way to alientate and marginalize politically active 14 year olds. That was my first thought. Not "yeah, you are totally right...except of course for people who'd like to but can't."

As I said, words MEAN things, and a perfectly reasonable comment can get lost or buried or ignored or actively campaigned against through thoughtless usage.

But now I am just being pedantic.

I'm thinking of upping my game. Do you give lessons in pedantry? Or in avoiding having a pedantic, belaboring, nitpicky subthread deleted? If we keep it up, the latter could come in very handy. :)

66. I have--at my own request!
It was naive of me to post in GD something that quickly (and predictably, to all but me) descended into dungeonal territory--so I alerted on my own OP.

In our case, however, the thread wouldn't get locked--only our subthread would be disappeared, and you and I would be barred from posting in this thread forevermore.

Sounds kinda poetic, doesn't it? (But black marks accumulate and can lead to a fate worse than death for a DUer ).

If we were going for mod intervention, the quickest way would be to engage in name-calling, asshole! How ignorant do you have to be not to know that? Yo mama prolly wears combat boots, too!

25. It's just as likely now as it has ever been.
They've been stealing elections for as long as they've been having elections. They had a primary election in, I think, 1956, in Texas between Ralph Yarborough and the incumbent Allan Shivers. They had matched up in the last three elections, and each time Ralph had gotten a little closer, scaring the party establishment, of whom Shivers was one. Polls showed Shivers trailing, and on election night as the votes were being counted, Shivers was losing.

So the Party declared that Shivers had won and refused to show anyone the votes. Yarborough went to his grave--forty years later and after 13 years in the US Senate--believing he had won, and a lot of historians agree with him.

Never stopped me from voting before. Does make me wonder about a few outcomes, though.

I will not vote for the candidates my Party has put forward in either the 1st Congressional District or the US Senate race this November. The guy running for the House seat is a DINO who I will not support and in the Senate race there is no difference at all between the two of them and I find both utterly objectionable.

45. make that Hell Yes
but then I have voted in every election since I turned 18. I always encourage people to vote. I don't even discourage people who tell me they're voting for the other side. The more you vote the less people can get away with stuff you don't approve of.

Also, I live in Oakland, CA. Jerry Brown lives in Oakland,CA. When Jerry Brown is not employed he tends to go to some of the same restaurants and cafes I like to go to. When Mr. Brown is employed I rarely encounter him in public. I have chatted amiably with him on numerous occasions. I have also been part of groups that had to pay for him since he has a habit of leaving before the check arrives. I've seen him do this to mutual friends at least 3 times. In addition to generally agreeing with his political views I object paying for his entertainment. Keep Jerry employed.

BTW I have also seen Mr. Brown passing out voter info on local issues, alone in local parking lots and business districts with out any media or personal assistants about. I've also encountered him doing this on numerous occasions for a bunch of different local issues.

He's the only professional politician I have ever see do something like this.

I get my ballot in the mail, and will probably have it back in the mail before November 1st.

That's not pre- or absentee voting; the whole state votes that way. Some will hang on to their ballots and deliver them to drop boxes in November.

But I STRONGLY encourage all DUers to vote in THIS election.

In some ways, this particular election is more important than the 2008 election.

Let the GOP KNOW that they're the minority and that the American people aren't going to let any radical freaks "take their country back", whatever that means.

In fact, I'd rather not know what that means.

I'm very optimistic about these races. I can't see Californians electing Meg--her campaign ads could be used to coerce confessions at Abu Ghraib. And Carly seems to get nuttier the more she opens her mouth.

Not counting my chickens yet, but I'm in a VERY GOOD mood these days... :)
