I called Obama's office and had this odd conversation
Edited on Fri May-18-07 05:15 PM by mycritters2
with a staffer. I asked if he is a member of the DLC. At first she said she didn't know what that was. When I told her what it stood for, and again asked if he's a member (I honestly didn't know), she said "We're not allowed to talk about that."

I said "What?" She said she could give me a number for someone else to call, but that she was not supposed to talk about it herself. Then "So that's that. Anything else I can help you with?" So, I told her I'm opposed to the immigration bill, and let her go.

Does that seem odd to anyone else?

2. No, it was probably a young intern.

She was probably told not to talk about any policy issues that she doesn't know the answer to.

And to answer your question, Obama has never been a member of the DLC.

3. No Obama Office is like that
For Some reason you have to know the party you need to talk to. I call about Vets so they know me. But Sometimes you want to yell at them.

4. She should've said that she couldn't talk about it since she
didn't know what it was in the first place.

Did you get the other number she wanted to give you?

8. If she didn't know what it was, how'd she know not to talk about it?
I imagine they have orders not to free-lance attempts to define where the candidate stands on issues. That makes organizational sense. A candidacy must speak with a consistant and disciplined message. That means tell the folks who answer the phones and other grunt staffers defer to official spokespersons when confronted with complex questions.

I would read nothing diabolical into your conversation with that receptionist. There's MUCH better ways to do research on a candidate than randomly phoning up volunteers at the local office.

12. It was a simple yes or no question. Hardly a complex policy issue. nt

9. sounds like she didn't know what you were talking about
She may have been told to clam up if asked about something they don't fully understand, in case somebody is trying to trick them into saying something. But yeah that is an odd conversation.

11. I agree with Radical Activist
She's probably a lowly paid summer intern, on her first
'real' job and she doesn't speak for the candidate. EVER!!!!
Those would probably be the rules.
