For his part, panel Chairman Joseph I. Lieberman , I-Conn., offered unequivocal praise for the nominee, pointing to his “extraordinary public service experience.”

The committee’s ranking Republican, Susan Collins of Maine, offered a similar assessment, but injected a bit of the election year budget debate that frames Lew’s nomination into her remarks.

“The last time that Jack Lew served as head of OMB he served a Democratic president who worked with a Republican Congress to produce a balanced budget,” she said, “And I’m hopeful that history will repeat itself.”

“That was absolutely diabolical of you,” Lieberman quipped in response.
