Vote underway for future of Indianapolis GM Stamping Plant
Edited on Thu Sep-23-10 01:29 PM by Hannah Bell
Indianapolis — This week, union workers with the UAW local #23 are casting their votes to accept or reject the offer by JD Norman Industries to buy the GM stamping plant in Indianapolis.

Rejecting the plan would mean the two million square foot facility will close by next September, putting about 640 people out of work. Accepting it would keep the plant running but union officials claim it would cut their pay nearly in half.

Several people told Fox59 News they would rather take their chances and find other work, rather than rely on Justin Norman to place them in another position.

Although this vote by the union is by mail-in ballot, union leaders are inviting members to come here in person to have their votes recorded before taking them to the post office. Basically, they don't trust that the ballots will be counted accurately so they have a photographer inside taking pictures of each member's vote so they can track the count.

GM workers vote 'in protest'

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) - Union workers at the Indianapolis GM metal stamping plant are voting again on whether or not the plant should be sold to J.D. Norman. If the sale doesn't go through, the plant is slated to close. The vote Thursday morning was far from a normal union vote.

Local Union leaders are calling Thursday's vote one of "solidarity"

Union members paid for a photographer to film the voting inside the local union hall, as well as for the post office to be represented on site. This is all in an effort to combat the International UAW request for another vote.

Local leaders say it is clear the majority will vote no.
