Facebook Down, Slows Up Large Chunk of Internet

http://thenewsoftoday.com/facebook-down-slows-up-large-chunk-of-internet/2512/

As if it wasn’t bad enough that one of most popular websites in the world seems to be down for the majority of users on the planet, the downtime of Facebook has also been responsible to slowing up a good portion of the internet.

Not only is Facebook.com down, but the like button, share button, and like widgets are also down. This means that any sites which have these features integrated into their site will experience slower load speeds as user’s browsers get tied up trying to load the various widgets and buttons from the facebook servers. Also any sites using Facebook connect will also be unusable during this time.

The downtime seems to have started approximately 70 minutes ago, and is one of the more widespread outages that Facebook has experienced in recent times.

1. One website can screw up the whole series of tubes?
Wow.

Maybe it is time for facebook to disappear forever. For National Security, of course.

20. No No No Many People on FB are activists
Edited on Thu Sep-23-10 04:05 PM by Bryn
Against the Corporate Personhood, against messing with SS, support Unions, against all things that super rich/elites/corporations support as well as fighting against extending the tax cuts for the rich. We need those people to get truth out.

I bet you that CEO of facebook doesn't like it. Recently he gave 500 million dollars to a school, but someone mentioned that he wanted to destroy the teacher union. Not sure if this is true.

5. This doesn't seem to be slowing down many other sites.
I've gone to check on a few sites that I know of with multiple facebook widgets and they all loaded just as fast but with a red x picture box in that space where the widget was.

Probably just the influx of the millions of people having to visit the other websites and blogging on other sites that Facebook is down is what is causing the slowdown.

15. Now they have no DNS servers available
I expect they threw that switch to end the traffic that was eating up all their bandwidth. Now they are truly offline. :(

21. I agree with Betty White
when she joked that it was a waste of time.

Start charging Facebook for the bandwith it sucks up, then that will force them to charge users for it. Problem solved.
