Granholm praises Teach for America efforts in Detroit

By Chastity Pratt Dawsey
Free Press Education Writer

Gov. Jennifer Granholm watched this morning as students at Detroit’s Southeastern High School used yarn in a lesson about acute angles and studied yeast for a lesson on metabolism.

The classes are being taught by recent college graduates, who are members of the Teach for America Corps. Granholm said she visited the school to shine a light on these teachers who are among the highest-achieving college graduates in the nation. They have committed to two years of teaching in urban and rural areas.

“These young people are the best of the best,” Granholm said. There are 26 TFA instructors in DPS classrooms this year.

1. Are they even unionized?
Scabs are shitstains on the underpants of humanity and do not deserve to teach our children.

2. ALL Democrats are on the same page on education. Exactly the same.
Even those I thought wouldn't be. Not a single one takes the side of public school teachers.

5. Why is it necessary to make this a conflict between sides (teachers vs. students)?

8. Untrue, this one does--and I'm disgusted with what has been happening lately.
Ex-AFTer here, by the way; I left the profession.

3. Are her kids taught by a Teacher for America?
Edited on Fri Sep-24-10 01:13 PM by Mass
There may be some individuals among TFA who are great, but the truth is that they are barely trained and thrown into classes without a net. This shows to what point we dont consider education as an important function, and particularly for low-income families. (Every country have their TFA teachers, but most countries dont try to tell us they are better than properly trained teachers).

7. the program exists to bring in incompetent teachers because there is such a shortage of teachers?
Edited on Fri Sep-24-10 03:38 PM by stray cat
doesn't look like it. Some teachers are great and some stink - whether they have a degree in teaching or not. just like any profession. I have a highschool student who is more competent than some I have hired with college degrees and experience - and this is in medical research!

10. So teachers do not need to be trained. This explains so much.

(No offense to the experienced and trained teachers here. As a parent, I find that shocking).
