Oops! South Bend billboard error creates embarrassment

SOUTH BEND — If you ever wondered how much difference just one letter can make when it comes to a message, ask the thousands of people who drove by a digital billboard near the intersection of Ironwood and State Road 23 between Thursday and Monday morning.

The ad urged people to go to the "southbendon.com" website for a look at the "15 best things about our pubic schools." That's right, the billboard said "pubic" instead of "public" schools. The letter "L" had been left out of the word public.

Lee MacMillan of South Bend said his wife spotted the error on Saturday while sitting in traffic.

"She got home and said, ‘I can't believe it said what I think it said,’" MacMillan recalls.

"So we were out driving around yesterday and sure enough, it had that typo in it. So we took a picture and the rest is history, as they say," MacMillan adds.

1. Public/Pubic in 2010 = No Error
Why one "l" bothers people into prayer is amazing.

5. Hey, in our public schools around here in HS,

my daughter was giving the facts, then everyone was given rubbers. In the form of one of those rubbery 'live strong' type bracelets with the name / phone of Planned Parenthood embossed in it. Maybe the lesson would have been different had it been a pubic school.

At least the local Catholic High School got to put condoms on bananas - which really floored me considering their religious doctrine. That was a right of passage for my brothers years in public high school in the 70s and mine in the 80s.

7. Actually, the condoms on bananas thing doesn't surprise me.
While protestants believe you're damned from the git go, and you have to stay pure (though it won't do any good), Catholics fully expect people to be human, and if you're going to sin (then deal with that sin in confession) it's better to not compound the sin with life-threatening disease - pretending that condoms are ONLY for disease (and still a sin to use) not for preventing pregnancy (a much bigger sin).

I've always thought that a very pragmatic approach.*

*(Applicable only in the US and select Western European countries.)

9. Maybe they really are starting Pubic Schools
After all, Indianapolis and Fort Wayne made the "most sexually satisfied" cities list . . . Indy came in first . . . and where is South Bend?
