It's a small well-kept house in a modest neighborhood. The sign on the door says

Fellow (I'd guess him to be past the long side of seventy) strolls over from an adjoining lot and asks if he can help

I'm a volunteer for the Democratic Party, looking for Mr Y Z

That's him. I run my spiel: Important election. Everybody registered? Need folk who'll support Our President. Want lit on our Senate candidate?

He holds out a gnarled garden-dirt encrusted hand and catches the little flier between two knuckles. A couple of grandkids, maybe five and eight, come from the house and flank him

Will you be voting, sir?
Oh, I never miss an election

I glance at the grandkids. The little girl has adorable braids twisting out every which way. Both of them are beaming beaming beaming at me. I nod and smile at each of them

Can I ask if you'll be voting Democratic?
I always vote Democratic. I've never made enough money to vote Republican

The kids have come out to talk with him not me, so I smile, thank them all, and move on down the block

I would vote R. That was long ago. Now I vote anything else, Green, Libertarian, whatever, never Republican.

19. In the "Alabama" T-zone in central Penna., we got some good feedback at a recent lit drop.

A lot of people pumped their fists in the air and said, "We have to keep fighting!" When you're down because of all the negative news reports, it's the folks on their porches, promising to get to the polls and vote Democratic, that keep you going.

21. Had a conversation with someone doing voter registration at an event today

It was at a seminar on veterans' education benefits, hosted by my CA (GOP) congressman. He wasn't there (duh, Congress is still in session), but had two aides reprsenting him (and he recorded a video to welcome us to the event).

A worker at a voter registration table in the back of the room noticed me in my VN jungle shirt (I was working two of the booths there) and asked if I'd served in Vietnam. Her grandfather had served there, too, and she was outspoken in her appreciation and support for veterans.

I thanked her for being there to register voters. I asked what group she was with, and she named a Republican group for which she works as paid staff. "I happen to be a Liberal," I said, "and I work for dem candidates." I told her I'd gone to Ohio for two months to work for Kerry in the '04 campaign, and I respect anyone who devotes his or her time to political activism--from any party. I thanked her again for doing voter reg. (I HOPE she's turning in dem registrations, because we've had a documented problem in CA with some Republican groups not doing that.)
