The Curious Case of Bradley Manning by Nozomi Hayase
The case surrounding the military charges against Bradley Manning for possible crimes relating to releasing classified data has raised a heated controversy.
The case divides people into two camps. One holds those who support Bradley Manning and call him a true patriot for following the dictates of the Constitution by exposing possible war crimes, general negligence and duplicity by the US government. The more prominent ones are Daniel Ellsberg who himself released the classified Pentagon Papers, film maker Michael Moore and prominent scholar Noam Chomsky. And then there are those who disapprove of Manning’s actions and call him a traitor. Many of them feel Bradley Manning broke the law and therefore needs to suffer the consequences.
When it comes to Manning’s case, the difference in views appear to involve how each group views the law. For one his actions were regarded as a token of courage, integrity and patriotism and for others the same action is seen as criminal, careless and un-patriotic. The most interesting thing about this contrasting views is the characterizing of patriotism by both sides.
One might ask how it could be possible for the same attribute to be noted by two completely opposing views. One says a true patriot supports the prosecution, the other says that Manning himself is a patriot.
