Caught a rerun of Robocop on cable
Great 1987 movie about a corporation taking over government, at least one of its branches (in this case the cops), and rewrites the law (directive 4).

If a movie deserves a reboot, this is the one.

We have got closer to this scenario now.

1. Given that Hollywood is constantly recycling old ideas that made money
I'd say that a reboot of Robocop is very likely. No doubt it's already been pitched numerous times.

2. Yep, Darren Aronofsky was attached to direct
But he quit, because the studio wanted to make it a 3D CGI-fest and he wanted something more lo-fi and gritty, like the original.

3. Refreshing to hear
that here are filmmakers who still understand what works. I have nothing against flashy special effects, but Robocop has to be gritty.

4. I wonder if they'll miss the point, though, and take out the political/social part
to add more "shoot-em-up" whether CGI-3D or "gritty". If their plan is to make a Michael Bay movie, the should just leave the original alone.

5. Check out "The Marching Morons"
Robocop lifted several ideas from Cyril Kornbluths 1951 story.

I'd buy that for a dollar....

6. You mean Idiocracy?

Verhoeven recycles a lot of ideas

Nothing wrong in that. Great minds are inspired by great minds.

Edit: if anything this was remade as Idiocracy

7. We read that in high school literature
We had a minicourse called "science fiction" featuring old pulp stories in " the science fiction hall of fame volume 1". http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Science_Fiction_Hall_of_Fame,_Volume_One,_1929%E2%80%931964

"Arena" became a plot for Star Trek, TOS

8. This is why Theodore Sturgeon is my favorite Sci Fi author
It took me years to realize how deep his writings were.

9. Paul Weller brought a little bit of "Buckaroo Banzai" with him
"The Star Wars defense system accidentally fired today, coincidentally killing two former presidents that lived in the Southern California area"
