Doctors raise doubts about Ariz. deputy's shooting

Pathologists raise more questions about April desert shooting of Arizona sheriff's deputy

Two nationally known forensic pathologists are questioning a sheriff deputy's version of how he was shot in the remote desert south of Phoenix, adding to theories that the incident was a hoax timed to enflame the debate over illegal immigration.

Pinal County Deputy Louie Puroll told investigators he was following a group of smugglers carrying bales of marijuana on April 30 when he was ambushed by men firing AK-47 rifles. In what Puroll described as a running gunbattle, he said he was grazed by a bullet in the back.

The pathologists, Dr. Michael Baden of New York and Dr. Werner Spitz of suburban Detroit, examined photos of the wound released by the sheriff's office. They told The Associated Press on Friday they concluded the bullet was fired from inches away, not at least 25 yards as Puroll said.

................

When asked if the bullet could have been from 25 yards away, he said: "No, it was not (even) from 1 yard away."

1. This screams 'hoax'
According to the article, the sheriff is standing by his deputy's story - making him complicit in perpetuating this fraud upon the public. Neither one need worry, however. After a slap on the wrist, they'll probably become 'special commentators' at FAUX News - trotted in front of the cameras whenever Sir Ruprecht Morlock wants to gin-up a frenzy over 'illegals.'

2. So who really shot him then if the "running gun battle" isn't possible?
Two doctors believe that the cop was shot inches away, so the cop's story doesn't fly.

3. He's in Sheriff 'Little Joe' Paul Babeu's department...
This smelled funny--and all too convenient--from the very beginning.

Babeu, a political ally of Maricopa's Sheriff Joe Arpaio, has been doing all he can to grab media attention for the myth of increased violence on the Arizona border (even though his jurisdiction is not even ON the border). He's gone so far as to publicly appeal for public donations to arm his deputies with automatic weapons because "we're outgunned by the Mexican drug cartels."

Babeu has slammed President Obama in his public statements and interviews--and has done interviews with a white supremacist radio station and a radio host who promotes a wide range of conspiracy theories.

Sheriff Babeu, even moreso than Joe Arpaio, has a political agenda--and faking a shooting of a deputy by "illegal immigrants" in the desert is something I wouldn't put past him.

You might remember Sheriff Paul Babeu from John McCain's "build the danged fence" ads. Babeu--again, whose jurisdiction is not even ON the border--was featured in the ad guiding McCain along the border fence.

The deputy's shooting in the desert was a STAGED event to advance an RW anti-immigrant political agenda, period. Fuck Godwin's Law--these guys are doing the same thing the Nazis did in demonizing selected groups of people.

4. A civilian could look forward to getting arrested for filing a false report
I wonder what our "hero" is going to get? I wonder if cops who were really injured in the line of duty think it's all right to lie about it? Will Mr. Puroll get a citation for heroism in the line of duty?

6. There wqas a time, not so long ago, when Pinal County voters would not have elected
the likes of Babeu. That ended when Pinal County became a bedroom community of Phoenix, full of closeted hatemongers from out of state--and I hate to say it--retirees.

I would love to see the Feds get hold of this--there's time to stop Babeu from gaining more power.
