House leader: Colbert was an 'embarrassment'

Sunday, September 26, 2010

The House's No. 2 Democratic leader said Sunday that comedian Stephen Colbert's testimony last week on immigration was "inappropriate" and "an embarrassment."

Democratic Rep. Zoe Lofgren of California invited Colbert to appear before the House Judiciary Committee. But other Democrats weren't happy about her decision.

The committee chairman, Rep. John Conyers, D-Mich., asked Colbert to leave the room at the beginning of the hearing because the comedian had no expertise in farm labor issues or immigration policy.

House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer of Maryland told "Fox News Sunday" he thought the episode was more of an embarrassment to Colbert than to the House. But, he added, "I think it was inappropriate" that he testified.

1. Hmmm. . .
Steny Hoyer must be one of those congressmen who think the public gives a damn what they think. And when a dem goes on fox and tells that audience precisely what they want to hear, then that's my definition of a former dem.

You want embarrassment? Try the Senate's failure re DADT. Or the truly idiotic hearings regarding steroids in baseball. Or continued funding of the non-war in Iraq and the failing war in Afghanistan. Need some more? How about providing stimulus funding, just not enough of it? Or having actual congressmen blame the unemployed for their unemployment? Oh, here's another. Total, abject, unadulterated failure to address the illegal immigration issue like real live adults. And I'm sure congress is proud of the way that McCain (Sen-Alzheimer's) responded to the reporters last week from Advocate magazine. I'm sure that filled Mr. Hoyer with pride. And let's not forget the right, and now, sadly, the left, creaming their pants over a minuscule percentage increase in the highest marginal tax rates for the ultra rich. And Hoyer has the nerve to say that Colbert embarrassed himself? Mr. Hoyer, you and your fellow racketeers on both sides of the aisle embarrass this once great nation.

16. Just try to e-mail Hoyer
His website does not allow e-mails from non-constituents. What a twit. If you're not willing to hear from people outside your district, then you have no right showing up on national tv.

I think there should be two new laws. First, term limits for congresspersons and prohibition of old white guys with wattles from running for office.

5. My question to Steny Hoyer is...WTF are you doing on Fox News Sunday?
Right before the election?

Steny Hoyer should be on Rachel Maddow or Ed Schultz. But him being on FNS instead just confirms my belief that these Blue Dogs are just undercover Republicans.

What a jackass. Allowing himself to be interrogated on a show that only matters to shit-for-brains Republicans but ignoring the left-of-center media (what little of it there is) is inexcusable.

Jesus H. Christ, are they TRYING to lose?

Am I the only one thinking this?

6. If Hoyer doesn't care about how we treat migrant farm workers, he can just say so plainly.
This is just politics-speak for "I don't want to talk about that issue."

7. i have no problem with the democrats distancing themselves
Colbert's performance was a (brilliant) mockery of politics, not just the republicans.

Colbert is under no illusions about the politicans' reactions. He knows everyone on both sides is going to score some points against the New York elitist "trivializing" our sacred institutions. Who cares.

8. Colbert wrote the script a week ago, and Steny just figured that out.

Hoyer: "This was not a serious discussion of workers' rights."

Colbert: "Exactly."

Edit: typo

12. And these are the Dems.
The ones we're supposed to support. How many times do these people have to prove how old, rich and out of touch they are with us, the people who are expected to support them.

It's like they don't even try to get it.

15. Holy Crap!
I guess it's true. There really is a permanent record that follows you after high school. I guess that will make Colbert think twice.
