I finished reading the Chrysallis Effect over the course of yesterday's flight.

Whoever recommended it here on the ol' DU, this is a fantastic book that should be read by all. It's thesis is simple... the rise of radical (insert here) is a reaction to the inevitable change in world culture. And it is quite a good, and all but complex read.

Now let me add another one that was recommended by my cousin while in Mexico. Judt's Ill Fares the land

All you progressives should make a point of getting this and chiefly reading it. I thought, ok a little philosophy will be good, or history or what have you. Well, it is actually helping in firming up many of my ideas of what is happening to labor and labor movements these days. In fact, these two books are doing a lot for me, and my questions. Of course, after I am done with them, back to reading primary sources, and writing and editing, and all that.

But definitely these are two books that will help you to clarify a lot. The latter as to why the left has been somewhat ineffective... that said, Santayanna is right and those who forget history.... welcome to a new Dickensian world... which many of us have called this before. IMHO it will get far worst before it gets better. Oh and running, leaving or what have you... will make a tinker's damn of a difference. If this gets bad enough, we are facing a world war in the not so distant future.
