Vulnerable House Dems Declare Their Independence

LAS VEGAS — Rep. Dina Titus has been a loyal soldier in pushing the Democrats' ambitious agenda, voting for health care legislation, extended unemployment benefits, new energy taxes and a repeal of the military's ban on gays serving openly.

Her campaign signs, however, proclaim Titus an "independent voice" for Nevadans.

Aware that their stock has taken the same tumble as home values, Congress' most vulnerable Democrats are declaring their independence from their party's agenda in Facebook profiles, television advertisements, news interviews and campaign websites leading up to the Nov. 2 election. That's when Republicans hope to retake control of the House they lost four years ago.

The rebranders include Democratic Reps. Betsy Markey and John Salazar in Colorado, Zack Space in Ohio, Jason Altmire in Pennsylvania, Glenn Nye in Virginia and Joe Donnelly in Indiana. In Texas, Rep. Chet Edwards, once promoted as a potential running mate for Barack Obama, has become a vocal critic of his party's policies.

The tactic could hurt Democratic turnout at a time when the party needs to protect its majority in Congress, some political strategists say.

Zack Space is way better than his opponent - Bob Gibbs (R). Gibbs is not Congressional material by any means and will be lock step with whatever Boehner or tea party leaders say. Space is running the campaign that he has to run for his district. He might only be with us on 80% of the issues, but Gibbs would be with us on 0%.

The Democrat that is running for Governor of Colorado is way out front in the polls and he is a Democrat. Why can't the other Democrats for Congress run as strong??

hunting them down like dogs and blames them for everything? They're trying to get re-elected, ferchrissakes, and it's not easy out there.

But since they won't stand up and be shot down like the heroes some prefer, just go ahead and let them be beat by some teabag Republicans because we don't want to to work for anyone who doesn't meet our purity standards and then see how we fare under Speaker Boehner.

11. The President has encouraged Democrats to run away from him and the national party when necessary

Democrats are the party in power and the economy is shitty and therefore people blame the Democrats for the economy being shitty. Americans are fickle in their voting preferences and practically have amnesia. This isn't a problem that could have been avoided if there was more party solidarity and everybody knows it.

The only thing we can do is individualize these races and make them about the candidates and not about the President. Some of the GOP candidates this cycle are tea-bagging nutjobs and we have a chance to keep the House if people are focused on that rather than focusing on the President.
