The problem with education in America that is seldom discussed..
The _real_ educational system in the USA is the glass teat, our children spend more than half again as much time in front of the TV as they do in the classroom.

And what drives the vast majority of television programming? The need of advertisers to sell something.

Number of minutes per week that parents spend in meaningful conversation with their children: 3.5
Number of minutes per week that the average child watches television: 1,680
Hours per year the average American youth spends in school: 900 hours
Hours per year the average American youth watches television: 1500

1. The correct response to those figures...
...is to make school resemble television as much as possible.

Edutainment.

It's obvious, isn't it?

2. What pisses me off is the amount of time my kids spend in front of a screen AT SCHOOL.
They see more movies at school than at home.

At my children's former school during lunch hour (in the library!) they would play really old racist cowboy and indian cartoons. What the hell :grr:

3. That's certainly part of the problem. I think another part is

that people seem to expect ALL the children to be above average. This is RL, not Lake Woebegon.

And of course many children are disadvantaged...poverty, cultural deprivation, etc.
