5 Weeks Out Polls Reveal a Surge of Support for Democrats
Posted on September 26, 2010 by Jason Easley

New polls released in Kentucky, Nevada, and California show that Democrats are making a big comeback in each state, and the tide may be turning against the GOP. In Kentucky Rand Paul has blown a 15 point lead in less than a month. In Nevada, Harry Reid is up by 5 points on Sharron Angle, and in California the Democrats in both the gubernatorial and the Senate races now lead.

The most interesting case is in Kentucky where Rand Paul has seen a 15 point lead evaporate in less than three weeks. During the first week of September, Paul lead state attorney general Jack Conway 55%-40%, in the Courier-Journal/WHAS 11 Bluegrass Poll, but that lead has complete vanished as Paul still leads 49%-47% with 4% undecided. The race is now within the margin of error, which means that it is a dead heat. What appears to have happened is that women are now tuning in and paying attention, and coming home to the Democrats. In the earlier September poll, Conway only had a 3 point lead with women, but that lead has since ballooned to 16 points. Paul has also seen his lead over Conway drop by 16 points among those who make $50,000 or more.

In Nevada, a Public Opinion Strategies Poll of registered voters shows Harry Reid leading Sharron Angle 45%-40%. Both Reid and Angle were known by 98% of those surveyed, and what seems to be killing Angle is a low favorable rating. Both Reid and Angle have high unfavorable ratings of 51% and 52% respectively, but the difference between the two candidates is that Sharron Angle has 38% favorable rating compared to 44% favorable rating for Reid. If Republicans would have run a candidate that voters in Nevada could like, Reid would probably be well on his way to defeat, but as it stands if Reid wins by 5-6 points, the GOP will have the Tea Party to thank for costing them another Senate seat.

In California, a new LA Times/USC survey has found that both well known and wealthy Republican candidates for senator and governor are faltering. The underfunded, but well known, Jerry Brown is now leading Meg Whitman 49%-44%. While Sen. Barbara Boxer has opened up an eight point lead on her Republican challenger Carly Fiorina, 51%-43%. Both of the GOP candidates have the same problem. Voters don’t like them. Meg Whitman has spent $119 million trying to become the next governor, yet she has only a 33% favorable rating. Her unfavorable rating is 44%. In comparison, her opponent Democrat Jerry Brown has 40% approval rating and 41% disapproval rating.

5. Recommended!!! So happy to see this happening. While not everyone is always
happy with the democrats, the democrats are a zillion times better than the grief and misery the republicans would deal out on this country.

9. With all due respect MM...
... I've pretty much had all of my optimism kicked out of me waiting for the change I was promised to happen. I tried sending our mortgage holder some "optimism" since I'm out of money, they want cash.

a wizard's wand? there WAS change - over the intransigent opposition of the GOP. just not the change you expected - it sounds like you expected socialism. did you forget you're in america?

22. Ahhh... so now..
... we have people who call themselves Democrats, calling other Democrats socialists, eh? I guess it wasn't bad enough coming from the other side of the aisle. What's next, gonna tell me of all the wonderful things NAFTA, BP, and Wall Street have done for me?

I don't believe in wizards or magic wands, but I do believe that not having a SPINE is NOT a good thing.

23. i'm not calling you a Socialist
i'm saying it sounds like you EXPECTED socialism. i WANTED socialism, but i never expected it.

Obama was a centrist in his campaign. you know what country you're in. it's a country where if you propose policy that extends the social contract instead of retracting it, you're called a communist. the president has very little room in which to turn the ship of state.

stop expecting "change" to mean what you think it should mean. things have changed. even though i'm as cynical as possible about Murka and the idiots that inhabit it, this is the season to think the glass is half full.

get back to whinging november 8th.

18. I'm sorry about your situation. You share it with many people.
There's no magic solution to a problem that grew over a decade, I'm afraid. I don't have anything to offer you that will help your situation. I'm pretty strapped, myself. I refuse to give in to pessimism, though. I can't.

28. I'm sure Obama will get around to dismantling the Constitutionally-designed government
and quickly legalize gay marriage, single-payer health care, and weed by executive order just as soon as he's done rescuing the economy and getting us out of Iraq and Afghanistan.

.. that this Nation needed some serious changes to happen soon, so that's what I worked and voted for, but not what I got. So, feel free to try and lay the guilt trip on me for actually expecting that there might be something done for those of us that rapidly circling the drain. I get it. Believe, I GET IT.

26. Now that you have had contact with cliffordu please be sure that all of your shots
are up to date.

Should update your dog and any house pets you have as well.

Your children's school nurse should be informed, but just as a precaution.

Please inform the authorities if any crop circles are formed with in a 47 mile radius of your home.

You should check around your house to make sure that all of your hoses are still attached to your house.

Any cars parked in the immediate vicinity should be checked with bottom torso mirrors.

If you have any friends that have dogs that can scent out illegal contraband invite them over for a 'doggy play time'.

Any phones that have unsecured landline connections should be checked for 'circuit integrity'.

Any other phones that have been within your house in the last 24 hours have been compromised.

Well that's just the Cliffordu shortlist.

You don't really need to do ALL of the above, however by clicking on this thread and reading this reply you have autmoatically eliminated any possible legal actions against me or any other DUer for failing to warn you of the possible side effects of having a Cliffordu encounter.

Besides that 'Welcome to DU'!!!!!

That was rather snarky and personal. I don't know you or Cliff or your history, but sure sounds like someone got pwnd. So far, the person you just dissed on as if he's Satan incarnate, is the one person on this board to offer me a civil greeting. What should that tell me? I've had several others give me lots of grief because I made the foolish mistake of actually believing that people I worked hard to get elected might do something to help me and mine in our struggles, as they said they would do when they wanted my vote and support. Silly me. I've been called a socialist, simply for wanting a chance to rescue that which I've worked my entire life to build before it's completely gone.

Now, what were you so merrily saying about Cliff? Ha ha ha?

17. Republicans aren't exactly the Breck Girl, are they?
Which is to say, that the closer voters get, the better they don't look. Time is growing short, but the Democrats have a terrific opportunity to make some historic gains. But they have to act like Democrats, which is asking quite a lot.
