|
As soon as they invented air conditioning the whole damn world wanted to move to the South.
I liked it a lot better when it was just the dregs of society that didn't have anywhere else to go down here.

19. Just another thread designed to bash the South |
|
The two nations would have eventually formed an alliance of the same sort that the US and Canada have. We look after each other's backs, even though one side got its independence from the British by war, and the other side got it by waiting for the British to get tired of the weather and just leave.

28. Considering that slavery was already being phased out around the world |
|
by the 1860s, and Brazil was the last Western country to outlaw it (in 1884), it seems highly likely that slavery would have died out in the South before the end of the 19th century.

But much of the South acts as though they miss having slaves.
And they did fight a war to keep slavery.
(That's what they meant by "State's Rights")

30. That's what the slaveowners might have meant by "states' rights" |
|
Edited on Mon Sep-27-10 08:29 PM by Art_from_Ark
but I doubt that the local people who fought at the Battle of Pea Ridge, Arkansas (the largest battle west of the Mississippi) were fighting for their right to keep slaves, since there were just a couple of towns in the area where there were slaves, and only a few at that. Rather, the "states' rights" issue had been ingrained into Southerners from practically the beginning of the Republic, and included other facets such as tariffs, like the so-called "Tariff of Abominations" of 1828 which really stirred up the "states' rights" crowd.

33. Slavery wouldn't have lasted in the South |
|
By the time WWI came up, it would have become obsolete for a large number of reasons. And, even if I'm wrong, the United States has made alliances with a lot of countries where our concept of freedom is a million miles away from the ordinary people.

37. By a cruel twist of fate, I'm here |
|
OK, just kidding, it was my choice. I'm a fairly recently transplanted Nortwesterner, and if we don't come from Seattle or Portland, we actually get along quite well with Southerners.
I just don't like to see this "The North is better than the South" BS. It takes all of us, urban and rural to make this nation. Speculating about what might have happened a hundred and fifty years ago, that simply just didn't happen, is fine for alternative history fiction, but on a political board, where we're all supposed to be on the same side, is just unnecessarily divisive.
