Why are we talking about tax cuts? Why are we NOT talking about raising taxes? |
|
See, here's the thing. By stalling a vote on the Bush tax cuts' expiring, the repubicans are trying to RAISE TAXES on the country.
Am I missing something?

You are not missing anything. The Republicans are always doing something then when it turns to the negative, its automatically the Democrats fault.

3. It depends on when you stick the stick in the sand |
|
If you allow the BushHoover bill to expire, then a vote to extend it would be a tax cut. The tax increase is already passed, it just hasn't taken effect yet. Potato Potatoe

because those who will profit from such an act do not give a shit about how many people die, how many lives are ruined, how many families suffer.
They simply do not care.
And by "they," I mean some "democrats" too.
When you realize they don't give a fuck about the average person, it makes it much easier to understand the things they do. The only people the govt. cares about are the rich.

5. I feel I am paying more than my fair share of taxes already |
|
If you want to talk about raising them on everyone but me, that would be OK.

6. Because our economy is a disaster. |
|
Essentially, the government taxes money out of existence, which is not a wise move right now.

11. I'm for letting the tax cuts for the rich expire as long as we are going to.. |
|
cut taxes elsewhere. I've long advocated a full payroll tax holiday, for example.
A net increase in taxes right now would not be sound economic policy. If Republicans are right, it is only by accident, not design.

7. They're stalling so that they can get what they want in January |
|
It's clear that there will be more of them in Congress after the elections, that way, they can get a full extension of the Bush tax cuts through each side of Congress, then the President has to look like the bad guy for vetoing it. All while paychecks are getting slimmer that same month.

on a lot of subjects. The pendulum has swung the other way, and I predict that if the Repukes want to shut down government the way that Newt Gingrich tried it fifteen years ago, it would be the President who got the blame, and not the Repig House.

12. because it's a one-way ticket to the political wilderness |
|
Government spending in the Bush and Obama era has gone from $3.4 trillion in 2001 to $6.4 trillion this year, or 88% growth compared to inflation and population growth of about 30%. In the face of that spending, any political party who advocates raising taxes while continuing to grow government makes winning elections a big uphill climb.

16. They won't do it before elections - who would vote? |
|
They'll do it after so it doesn't hurt immediate election chances. But I also think it is deliberately being talked about because the compromise has already been decided (meaning the whole package will probably be extended another year). I don't see Obama letting these run out.
