Remember the excuse? "Gibbs didn't scold the base. He attacked the professional left. Its different"
Edited on Mon Sep-27-10 07:45 PM by Mefistofeles
Every time the administration (Gibbs, Obama, Biden) attacks the base, defenders use the following defense: "He did not really attack the base. He attacked the "professional left," or "some democrats. he didn't say base."

That excuse just died today, as Joe Biden is quoted (not paraphrasing, quoting) as telling Democrats to "remind our base constituency to stop whining and get out there and look at the alternatives. This president has done an incredible job. He's kept his promises."

2. Apparently the leadership
needs to be reminded to stop whining about the base, and start representing the interests of the people that actually elected them.

38. Excellent response. The people who elected them vs the people who fund them.
That is the challenge. Who are they representing?

3. "stop whining and get out there and look at the alternatives"
Good message! Way to go Joe!

This is a different message than the professional left comment, which wasn't directed at the average person. But, I know some people are eager to feel insulted by this administration.

42. How come the teacher is not forceing this student
to stay awake? :sarcasm: The teacher must be one of those below averge rated ones. It couldn't be that the parents let him stay up half the night, or maybe he is working so he has money to buy games. Of course I've known students that contributed to the family income out of need. Or maybe he wears a hat in class to hide his eyes but try to take it off during class and the parents will be all over the teacher. Also maybe he is finished his work, yea that's the ticket.

Just saying.

22. I guess we'll find out whether Joe is utterly tone deaf or a 3d chess player in 36 days
Personally, I think that this is probably the single most counterproductive thing that the administration could continue doing (unless as has been suggested by some, that they want to lose in order to improve their own re-election chances.

Rather than channelling Phil Gramm, they ought to be throwing out red meat and providing concrete plans for how they're going to further their constituencies' interests.

Of course, that's old school stuff- guys like Franken for example, with their populist rhetoric, they're playing checkers. Haranguing the base is much more effective in the current political and economic climate.

I don't see you posting about them though. Why not be helpful and spread the word about Obama's progressive proposals that are being blocked by the Senate? It might help increase the Democratic majority.

Hey at least Franken's out there with one- though I haven't seen the leadership running over to jump on his bandwagon with it.

Might be wise to do so.

29. The people whining the loudest fall into two camps:

A) Those who won't vote Democratic, and are more or less trolls and provacateurs.

B) Those who are disappointed and whine incessantly, but will vote Democratic anyway.

In either case... calling the whiners what they are is not going to affect any of their votes.

37. No longer does a candidate have to run on their record or their platform,
Instead they're running on fear. Fear of the other side, fear of what will happen, fear, fear, fear.

It makes for a mighty poor way of running the country. Politicians are just that much less accountable for their record and platform. Instead, they just scream fear.
