I got busted tonight...
A couple of hours ago, coming home from work.

I'm driving an older model Acura, a small compact car.

So, I'm in a little hurry to get home and I pass 2 or 3 cars and get in the right lane of the Interstate when I notice a car behind me. Then the lights start flashing. Oh shit, I'm busted!

I pull over the next exit ramp and out of the way of traffic and a young state trooper comes up and ask for license, insurance, and registration. He's a skinny guy who looks like he has never shaved. Then he takes all the paperwork back to his flashing car.

But I don't have the normal Acura symbol on the back of the little compact. I have a peace sign. And underneath that, I have a DemocraticUnderground bumper sticker. Since I was doing about 80 mph in a 65mph zone, I was sitting patiently in front of the flashing lights, waiting for the verdict.

So he walks back to the car and tells me he is going to give me a warning this time. I take a different route home and my wife tells my how lucky I am. Probably because I'm a grandpa, she said.

1. Gotta watch that man.
If you were doing 80 in a 65 then you would have deserved a ticket.

You got lucky.

3. 80 in a 65 in Chicago will get you the finger as cars are flying by you with......
no more than 10 feet between them.

They drive like idiots and are proud of it.

8. Same thing in California...
Edited on Tue Sep-28-10 12:07 AM by walldude
When I visited there I had heard about the bumper to bumper traffic, but no one ever told me it was bumper to bumper at 90 miles an hour.

2. A warning isn't "busted". A warning is "gifted".
You got a gift!

Good for you, you lucky you, you.

4. My sister escaped a ticket she was doing
40 in a 35 miles zone. The trooper looked at her and said lady today is your lucky day. I hate to give a husband and wife a ticket in the same day. Come to find out about 1/2 before her husband was caught speeding in the same speed trap she got caught in.

5. In Ohio, it would be rare to see that happen for 15 mph over
10 and over is points on the license; under that, the cops are a bit more wobbly

10. Oh, I dunno
It was YEARS ago (never you mind how many, sonny), and I was hot-footing it home in the family Pinto (okay, you're in the ball park). Probably doing about 40 in a 25 residential zone, pulled up in front of the house, and I notice a car pull over behind me. "Huh, Liddy (the next door neighbor) has company," thought I. I further thought it strange that she would have company after dark. Then the top lights came on, and I realized I was the one who had company.

I was caught, but good, so I hopped out of the car and walked back to the officer's vehicle. He was occupied with other matters (like calling me in, and getting his citation book), and asked me to wait between the cars. I did so, when the porch light came on, and my mom came out. The officer got busy writing the ticket, and Mom wanted to know what all the hoo-ha was about. I glibly explained that Officer-r-r-r-r, uh, Smith here was about to write me up for speeding. Mom gave me her best withering stare, and brother, you never wanted to be on the receiving end of that!

Anyway, Officer Smith finished writing up the ticket, and then ran a big diagonal across it and wrote "WARNING." He didn't quite have the cold-blooded mentality to give me a ticket in front of my mom. I folded up the citation, thanked the officer, and breathed a quick prayer of gratitude. The officer advised me to take a good look at the ticket, and I said had, and thanked him again. Which is when my mom piped up, "You know, Officer." Inside me: Quiet, Mom, I just got away with it. "If you turned off your lights, and sat here for a few minutes, you'd catch two or three more, just like him." Thanks, Mom.

We said our farewells, and I went in to a late dinner. Sure enough, Officer Smith shut off his lights and waited. While I was eating dinner, he took off twice.

I think I still have the citation.

18. Well, man, we're about the same generation.
I remember those days. I got let off a few times. I also did what I thought was the proactive thing: Get out and walk to the cop.

Today, in Portland and elsewhere, that might get you shot or tased.

12. I got let off by a CT State Trooper in the late '70s.
He confiscated the pipe, but let us go on our merry way. Now, that was almost "busted."

G-d, how the world has changed. Maybe, it hasn't, in ways big and small. . . :hi:

13. I got busted running three stop signs in a row.
My van was cold and wouldn't stay running until it warmed up. So I just breezed through the stop signs, not coming to a complete stop.

It was a lady state trooper who pulled me over, she got my information and told me "I'll be right back with a ticket for running three stop signs in a row."

She came back and she let me go with a warning. WHEW!!

16. I was coming home from work late one night (11:30 pm or so) and hit the off-ramp at about 75.
The highway was a 65mph road, but 75mph was typical and NOBODY ever got stopped for going that slow. The off-ramp was 55 mph and so was the highway it dropped you onto.

Anyway, it was a long ramp and there, smack in front of me, was a cop in the grass with a radar gun hanging out of the window. I saw his car start to move and didn't even wait for the lights - I just pulled over. He didn't put them on until he had stopped behind me.

He came up and said, "I clocked you at 75 back there and the ramp is clearly marked as 55."

I replied, "You know sir, it's funny, but that's EXACTLY what my speedometer was reading when I spotted you."

He tried to suppress a laugh, but wasn't able to control the grin. "Just back it off a little next time."

I didn't even get a written warning.

17. I was going 85-90 on I-5 in So Cal this Saturday, got pulled over by a cop.
Had to cross 5 lanes to get all the way to the shoulder.
I was sure this was going to be expensive. The cop just breezed by and said through his loudspeaker "You get a free pass today". I was stunned.

I have a DU bumper sticker. No stickers other than DU.

26. Hey...that's one hopeful sign, Kentuck!
Something out there was smiling on you, buddy. And, maybe there are a few good folks left out there who don't think bumper stickers and peace signs are something to haul a person in for.

Gives me hope.

We had a bad encounter with a hot shot trooper a couple of years ago and we thought it was because of a Dem bumper sticker. Who knows. Maybe he just needed to pull a person to get his quota at the end of the month.
