1. How much of that is spent inside the US on information systems.

2. I agree 100% with one caveat-direct funds towards helping veterans of these wars(since 1940)
they've been lost in the military orgasmatron.

3. Amen. This is the gaping hole in both parties' claims of "fiscal responsibility."

10. And for all their bitching about government spending & big government,
the teabaggers never mention the MIC. They don't mind that the likes of Dick Cheney & Erik Prince siphon millions from the US Treasury, but the single mother down the street better not get food stamps.

What is it about the American people that so many are ok with the billions of dollars wasted on the MIC while we are turning off the street lights in our cities? That's our money that they are spending/giving to their buddies in the name of national security. How much longer are we going to put up with this shit?

4. graphs can be misleading
when something other than 0 is at the bottom of the y-axis.

The way yours is presented underemphasizes what was already being spent in 1998 and dramatizes the increase since then. Still, $650 billion is pretty damn wasteful.

5. It would be nice to see a chart
showing the percentage of the federal budget spent on the military, too.

Discretionary Budget, FY2011

The following chart shows the breakdown of the proposed federal discretionary budget for fiscal year 2011 by function area.

The discretionary budget refers to the part of the federal budget proposed by the President, and debated and decided by Congress each year. The part of the budget constitutes more than one-third of total federal spending. The remainder of the federal budget is called 'mandatory spending.' Fiscal Year 2009 will run from October 1, 2008 to September 30, 2009.

Note that this chart includes the war-related spending requested by the administration as supplemental to the regular budget proposal.

This shows how much the US spends on the military compared to the rest of the world. Can we really afford this?
