Shots fired at University of Texas campus
Source: Austin American-Statesman

UT police say an active shooting situation is taking place on campus. Officials believe they have the suspect contained. No other details are available.

“I’m driving there right now trying to get there,” university spokeswoman Rhonda Weldon said.

“The first report I got was that there was an armed suspect in the Perry-Casteneda library. Now I’m told by campus security that the individual has shot himself on the sixth but I’m not there yet so I can’t confirm that.”

1. Jesus.
I had a professor whose son was shot from the tower in the 1960s. Fred Eckman.

No I am a professor and any hint of this, especially at that campus (where my son graduated as well), is very disturbing.

3. local Austin news....
Yes- library has been shut down, campus on freeze or alert, depending on location, reporting that no one is being treated; man with a gun, (AK 47) reported to have shot himself, but not confirmed.

7. I'm hoping the reports of a possible 2nd gunman is wrong
It doesn't make sense to me for 2 gunmen to enter the library if one is just going to shoot himself. Here's to hoping it isn't true.

8. I'm with you, (and the rest of us, I'm sure) hoping there's no 2nd but

it makes no sense, and yet one must be overly cautious and respond to even the faintest of rumors.

This same kind of thing happened at VT...there were suspicions about more than one person in the immediate aftermath.

9. definately. I'm pretty impressed with the campus and the police right now...
Students were sent texts, campus was on lockdown VERY fast, danger sirens are going off...it's obvious the city and the campus have trained for this. I'm glad they're taking the rumors of a 2nd gunman seriously. It would be crazy not to.
