I filled up this morning for $3.17 a gallon

I caught a few minutes of Neal Boortz on the car radio yesterday and he was lying to his audience (why not, they deserve it) about the price of gasoline this year as compared to last year. He said gas was only up 18 cents. This may be true. But I made a note the first of last November that I filled up for $1.87 a gallon. This morning I filled up for $3.17. What has happened -- internationally - to cause gas to go up 70% in just 6 months ? Nothing, that I can see.

6. Nah, the folks from Illinois will be back for Memorial Day.
Anyone who'd spend so many thousands on their recreation for a boat and trailer they'll only use a couple dozen times a summer isn't going to let the high price of gas keep them away.

The golfers may golf closer to home, the Chicago families may not drive to the Dells, the water shows may have reduced attendance, but I'd bet my worm ranch that the anglers will come through for Eagle River.

11. It May Not Keep 'Em Away But They'll Have Less To Spend
The Speedway here was 3.45 a gallon....quite a contrast to the 29 cents it cost when I first got my license. I still remember the price being under a dollar a gallon right before the boooosh regime took power...now its $50 fill-ups. This is biting and I'm starting to see the effects. Many stations here are closing at nights and on weekends since business has dropped off at those hours. I expect we'll see ancillary effects on those travelling.

While they'll spend the money to get up to the lake and fuel up the boat, they'll have less to spend for the chocolate or antique or improvement on the property...a ripple that won't show up on the gas pump. The squeeze on budgets and incomes are being felt...even with the "richer"...just the sticker shock is having an effect.

I went to Camp Ojibwa back in the "stoned ages"...I still have fond memories of running around downtown Eagle River.

Cheers...

9. When I left for work yesterday
unleaded regular was 2.86 a gallon where I pump. When I drove home from work it had jumped 17 cents a gallon to 3.03. Last Sun a drunk driver totaled my car and currently driving a freinds full size pickup till the drunks insurance company gets me a rental on mon. It is going to kill me to fill that truck when I return it to him.

13. The gas prices around here have risen 42 cents in one week.
Last Friday they started the day at $2.97 and this Friday it's up to $3.39. Then I read this little tidbit:

Higher profits from its refineries outweighed lower crude oil prices.
April 26 2007: 8:36 AM EDT

NEW YORK (Reuters) -- Exxon Mobil Corp., the world's largest publicly traded company, said Thursday its first-quarter earnings rose as higher profits from its refineries outweighed lower crude oil prices.

Net income in the quarter rose to $9.28 billion, or $1.62 a share, from $8.4 billion, or $1.37 a share, last year.

Exxon = oil, g*dammit!
