Iran unveils squadrons of flying monkeys boats

Iran's Defense Ministry released photos of what it says are its new radar-evading flying boats, the Bavar 2.

Iran unveiled three squadrons of new flying boats on Tuesday, Iranian news agencies reported.

The craft, dubbed the Bavar 2, is armed with a machine gun and carries surveillance cameras, according to a report from the Iranian Student News Agency.

"Islamic Republic of Iran is one of the few countries which managed to design, build and use flying boats in a short time," said Defense Minister Brig. Gen. Ahmad Vahidi, who oversaw the delivering of the aircraft at the Bandar Abbas naval facility on the Persian Gulf near the Strait of Hormuz.

Flying Boat A Hit With Drug Smugglers

The Brio flying boat is just that -- a boat that flies! It goes up to 44 mph and can fly over 100 miles with a full load. Making it perfect for offshore drug smuggling. The kit costs $10,000 and comes with everything except the engine (so basically an inflatable boat and hang glider). You get to choose your own motor, which is fine with me, because I'm thinking jet engine. No word on altitude tests, but based on that first picture, I'd say it gets almost high enough to kill you if you fall.

A picture and a long video after the jump, but you'll get the idea after a minute.

Now THIS is what an industrialized-country considers a flying boat:

2. I find it very hard to believe that is 'radar evading'
even when on the water, what with lots of vertical surfaces and a big propeller.

5. Maybe it evades IRANIAN radar? Or maybe it's submersible? n/t

7. That would have been state of the art weaponry in 1925.
Guess it's faster than a bass boat, just a little . . .

Radar evading? Maybe if the blue paint is still wet and splashes over the radar screen of the target.

Ok - who's really worried about Iran's offensive capabilities? Raise your hands . . .

14. I believe they still field a handful of F-14s, and Migs of some vintage.
Nothing as awesome as radar-evading flying boats, of course. :D
