IMO Brown clearly won the CA GOV debate against Whitman.
Whitman was all campaign commercial, with horrible unpopular ideas.

Brown was so real and likable.

Can't wait to see the polls post debate.

20. I don't think any Californian missed Meg's saying the model for California is Texas.
Wow! That was the dumbest thing I've heard in a Gubernatorial Debate in California.

She says the model for California is Texas? She just ended her campaign with that one.

Yes, "she should move to Texas". She already left California once before for many years and then lied about it saying she'd lived here her entire life.

The model for California is Texas? That will be her political epitaph.

and Little Boots, as governor, made sure all of his greedy corporate friends could police themselves since they're so responsible.

Californians, especially up north, most are more environmentally aware. She should just publicly tell the people, she wants her corporate buddies to come to california to shite on the state.

Californians like Jerry Brown.

He deftly won the technical debating, but more importantly, his good nature and heart came through and she sounded like a broken record and was emotionless. Even her "it breaks my heart" was embarrassingly phony sounding.

Brown owns this race now. Edited for K&R.

39. I listened on my way home from work
It was kind of nice to listen in a bubble. I formed the opinion that he was kicking her ass all over the place, and I got independent confirmation of my suspicion when I got home and started reading comments here.

Jerry Brown had a relaxed, California demeanor about himself. Whitman didn't seem to make many big mistakes, but she sounded corporate, robotic, unenthusiastic. And of course what she's trying to sell is bunk, so that can't help. Brown just had that relaxed, conversational, and (again) Californian sort of disposition. I think he won the debate going away.

I was listening in the car, but I'm pretty sure she actually used that statistic.

Seriously? Over 5 years organized labor has spent just over 2x what she's spent in 7 months on a single campaign. Was that supposed to be a good point??? She's budgeted for a one year campaign the same amount that all of organized labor spent over half a decade?

That was the stupidest thing I heard tonight... Just beating out her horrible delivery on the awful Dracula comment.

63. Caught it online--here's a few thoughts
Brown had it all over Whitman when it came to facts and tying his arguments together. Essentially his main argument was, I've been there, I know how to do this job, If anyone can fix this mess it's me.

Whitman's main argument was her independence, and her ability to apply new ways imported from the private sector into government. Brown, I think, effectively rebutted much of that argument by reminding people that this is a complicated job and that he has the knowledge to get it done and emphasizing her ties to big business. Her arguments about Brown's ties to the public employees unions may be more effective--civil servants are the demons du jour among much of the population.

I was also rather surprised that the 72 year old Brown actually looked younger and sharper than Meg Whitman. If I were to guess which of these two were likely to survive two terms (perhaps literally) I'd have to say it's Brown. Whitman looked washed out and tired. Look for Whitman to get a new makup artist for her next debate plus a coach to teach her to not smirk while her opponent is talking. Brown had a proper poker face on for most of his reaction shots.

I'd like to see Bill Clinton get out there and campaign with Jerry--alright there's not much love there--but it would be a big help. The last President to balance the Federal budget along with the last governor to balance the California budget.
