Jerry Brown campaign celebrates debate victory
Edited on Tue Sep-28-10 11:11 PM by pinboy3niner

(Received Tuesday, September 28, 2010 11:46 PM Eastern)

DAVIS, Calif. - Fighting off a flurry of distortion and double-talk, Attorney General and Democratic Gubernatorial Candidate Jerry Brown tonight scored his first debate victory, drawing a clear contrast in substance and style, while blasting billionaire Meg Whitman for peddling multi-billion dollar tax breaks for California's wealthiest.

"Jerry Brown was the clear winner in tonight's debate," said Brown for Governor Campaign Manager Steve Glazer. "California's voters saw a clear contrast tonight: Jerry was candid, knowledgeable and real, while Meg Whitman stuck to her stump speech, stayed on script and offered few solutions to our state's mounting problems."

"Meg Whitman has a wealth of experience protecting the interests of Wall Street players and corporate executives, so it's no surprise that these individuals - not working Californians - have the most to gain from her policies," Glazer continued. "Meg Whitman's economic plan is tickle-down 2.0 - a shoddy, self-enriching plan to eliminate the capital gains tax for California's ultra-rich."

Okay, it IS the Brown campaign's PR, but it matches the assessment of DU's debate watchers. Between Brown and MegaBuck$, it was no contest. And, personally, I can't wait to see the analyses of factcheck sites on the debate. Meg spewed so many lies and distortions that the audience at UC Davis probably needed shovels to get out of the auditoreum when it was over.

Edited to add: The full video of the debate (59 minutes) is available NOW, on-demand, here:

5. Special thanks to DUer Amerigo Vespucci...
...who, despite UC Davis' message that the vid would be available "by noon tomorrow," checked to find that it is already available--and updated us on it.

I only get by with a little help from my friends and fellow members...thanks, Amerigo.

9. Meg has the charisma of a turnip.
Trying to overcome her insecurity with a false front....eesh. My heart almost goes out to her.

11. The turnips just tweeted that they are grievously offended
Especially those in their PAC, 'Turnips for Brown.' I'm expecting a similar message from those pod people whom I may have offended by comparing Whitman to a pod person.

Seems like we have to dig a lot deeper to find something to compare these GOP candidates to. Nazis and zombies are out, having already taken offense. Same for most horrible diseases.

Frankly, I'm at a loss. It seems there is nothing so horrible that Republican candidates are not MORE horrible. :)

13. me too Trajan!
I will be so happy to have him as Gov again -- and this time I'm old enough to vote! Both my parents were big boosters of Jerry, and of Pat Brown before that.

12. Whitman was a manequin. Jerry was warm and natural.
It's the overall impression left after the debate. You like him, and you just can't find her likable at all.

It's over. Thanks for the OP, pinboy3niner.

14. I just watched the news coverage of the debate on the local Fox affiliate in L.A.
It was VERY favorable to Brown.

They had as guests the chairs of the local dem and GOP parties.

The anchor questioned whether "Meg Whitman really wasn't up to this fight with Jerry Brown," and later said,"She lacked the splash that Jerry Brown had."

The GOP chair hit Brown on his age ("King in this state is youth"), but her most memorable non sequitur about Whitman was that "She drives her own car."

The dem chair didn't have to do much, with the Fox reporter and anchor telling the story--he could have phoned it in, lol. And the clip of Howard Jarvis--the leader of the fight for Prop 13--saying he voted for Brown because, even though Brown opposed it, he made Prop 13 work--was priceless.

Looks like our assessment of the debate is widely shared. :)

Oh, and I never watch the Fox affiliate, but I happened to leave it on after 'Glee,' or I wouldn't have caught it.
