1. Reporting in from Lynchburg, Virginia
I'm visiting my friends.

Driving along the streets, you see occasional signs at businesses and restaurants, showing support to the Falwell family. One restaurant had a sort of memorial to JF, indicating he was an angel in heaven looking after the rest of us. I think that Liberty University is having their graduation tomorrow with John McCain as graduation speaker. My goddaughter goes to the public high school here. When the announcement of Falwell's death was made on the school PA, she actually stood up, clapping and cheering and then exclaimed, "Is Cheney next?!" She just turned 13 this week.

5. Some more mourning, Rude Pundit-style...
http://rudepundit.blogspot.com/2007/05/dead-falwell-jerry-falwell-was-poison.html

Dead Falwell:
Jerry Falwell was a poison, a jowly backwoods cretin who used his abilities to calmly, smilingly spin entire worlds of nutzoid damnation and spew them into the airwaves to build the illusion of an empire, all fake gossamer and cash. For the better part of four decades, his gluttonous, bovine visage befouled our television screens, slavering ratings whores of the news networks ready to lift his gargantuan belly, resting it on their heads, to fellate him for all the good quotes he could weave from cultishly mad religious fervor, always smiling, that smug fuckin' smile of self-righteousness, of acting so God-stoned that he couldn't wipe Christ's blood out of his eyes. No wonder he was a man who looked like he enjoyed his pork rinds - he always had the Jesus-spliff munchies.

9. ...and Mrs. Betty Bowers of Landover Baptist pays her respects...
To us in the booming Christianity industry, Jerry was our Bill Gates, only he made his money marketing the actual bugs instead of the patches. So fleet was his ability to turn any sorrow or situation into an opportunity to tout the politics of self-satisfaction, he never seemed to get bogged down in all those many words Jesus blathered...

will often find that their single-minded ministry precludes them from the sacrament of matrimony.

So versed are they from this concentration of worship, they can enter a room together and between them toss-off entire passages of the good word. At times they will enter into one anothers' stated passage, completing it in a round robin of joyous praise. Some even fall to there knees, flailing as they speak in tongues.

So as you can see, it's not so funny after all.

I have somewhat mixed emotions about this one.
-------------------------------------------------------------------Yeah, me too. On one hand, I'm glad he's dead. On the other hand, I wish the vile hatred he spewed continually could be washed from the brains of all the people who were affected by it. That guy was the anti-Jesus. I wouldn't say he was the anti-Christ, because the world didn't end while he reigned on the earth. But he definitely didn't stand for tolerance and love of your fellow man, which made him decidedly against the teachings of Christ.

...Falwell is a special case and you know it; he has a track record of fascism so shit deep to the ankles that calling him a nazi is being nice. Most of my family are hardcore holy rollers, but I still love them. Sure, they try to convert me at every turn, but they now know better. Falwell was a power broker, who worked with Reagan, among other monsters. He has a track record and has hurt lives, not just went off at the lip. This man was dangerous and was a danger to the republic as well as a danger to common sense. His passing makes the flowers bloom and the birds sing. May the receding shit from the stockyards girdle his coffin.

This falwell, self-righteous pig of a man deserves nothing less than the derision that's come to him on these pages. There's a difference between righteous and self-righteous--it's called love vs. vanity. Falwell was as vain as a human can be, and despite emotional attempts to remember him as something more, he was and will be remembered as the w-hore who used/abused the faith of good people to advance his personal political agenda. Good riddance, falwell, you deluded pimp. The rest of us will live on to fix the results of your godless perversions.

19. Twins magazine message board...
Mr. Falwell was not hated because he was a Christian or because Christ was hated. He was hated because of the hateful manner in which he treated some of his fellow human beings, and because of the manner in which he encouraged his followers to treat others with hatred and disrespect (under the guise of "loving the sinner but hating the sin").

Mr. Falwell instigated a wave of activism to show hatred of certain groups in society by legislating away their civil rights. He encouraged families to reject their children...

25. FOX news
"Unfortunately, although allegedly far more loving and tolerant in private, Falwell will be remembered by many for being the public face of attempts to deny to many of his fellow citizens the same rights to liberty, freedom of expression and the pursuit of happiness which he and the fellow members of the Christian Right celebrated when applied to themselves." — Dave

Falwell will be remembered as a bigot who preached intolerance. His blaming of 9/11 on homosexuals and abortionists will long be representative of this. He could have preached a message of hope to millions, but instead used a tragedy to preach hate." — James (New York, NY)

"To me, Falwell does not epitomize or even resemble what a preacher or minister should represent. I found him judgmental, divisive, self-righteous, arrogant and intolerant." — Mary (Ocoee, FL)

"He will be remembered only in the short term. His legacy will be one of intolerance and bigotry." — MM

46. People remember this
“little patience, and we shall see the reign of witches pass over, their spells dissolve, and the people, recovering their true sight, restore their government to its true principles. It is true that in the meantime we are suffering deeply in spirit, and incurring the horrors of a war and long oppressions of enormous public debt … If the game runs sometimes against us at home we must have patience until luck turns, and then we shall have an opportunity of winning back the principles we have lost, for this is a game where principles are at stake.” Thomas Jefferson

I have always had great love and respect for Brother Falwell. He was a real stand up guy and wasn't afraid to tell people what he thought even if it brought heat on him. I know he was a man of conviction and lead by the Spirit. I think we would do good as Christians if we had half the fortitude this man had. He was a man of the ages and was used of GOD to help bring the Evangelical Conservative cause back into prominence.
Well done good and faithful servant
May GOD Bless Jerry Falwell

52. ABC "news"...
Edited on Sun May-20-07 08:34 AM by Kurovski
"I stopped taking Jerry Falwell as a serious christian when he supported Ronald Reagan over a Christen, Jimmy Carter who walked-the-walk. And I used to receive the Moral Majority Newsleter and he wrote that if God could vote, he'd vote Republican."

"... Who was it who prayed on national TV for certain Supreme Court Justices to leave office for poor health... so Bush could appoint his cronies? Who was it who prayed that a government leader (Chavez of Venez) should die? Please don't assume that your intolerant bully pulpit is "Christianity" or moral. Conservative politics and "christianity" aren't the same..."

(a lot of posts seem deleted, as people are protesting posts that don't exist. Why don't they exist? It's simple as ABC.)

55. Another tender eulogy, this time from The Denver Westword...
"Relax, Tinky Winky -- Jerry Falwell is Dead

Like Saddam Hussein, the Rev. Jerry Falwell, who died on May 15 at age 73, was satirized so frequently that it's easy to underestimate his influence. Of late, he was best known for determinedly moronic cultural crusades and brain-dead pronouncements epitomized by his assertion that Tinky Winky, the purple Teletubby, was gay. But Moral Majority, an organization he headed, helped establish the conservative Christian voting bloc that gave America presidents Ronald Reagan and George W. Bush..."

59. A boo-hoo from a Yahoo board...
"Jerry Falwell. one of the most despicable abusers of the teachings of Jesus and the earnest faith of religious Christians, a foul mean-spirited power hungry neanderthal who sought to set back civilization has been called to meet his maker, I have no doubt, he will join the other racists, bigots. homophobes, war mongers, greedy money-grubbing corporatists and holy rolling religious hypocrites he supported, encouraged and empowered.

There are those who will say you should not speak ill of the dead, I disagree, now is the time when others will try to honor and glorify an evil, small, ugly, meanspirited fool, who did immense damage to so many spheres of modern life, modern Christianity, American politics, television, education--and through all of those, the rest of the world,
His support of Right Wing extremists enabled corporations and war hawks to exploit their opportunities to wreak war, havoc, violence, hate, irrevocable environment damage, poverty and suffering upon millions,

If any soul is a candidate for Hell. this man fits the profile."

"...You are trying too damn hard to be politically correct. Give it up. Falwell claimed to preach the message of Jesus, yet he did the exact opposite. Whatever happened to calling a spade a spade and letting the chips fall where they may? I did not say "May he rot in hell", I did not say that I hope his family suffers upon his passing, I did not say that he never ever did one decent thing, I just said "good riddance"

This world may not be a better place because of his passing, but it certainly won't be worse because of it. As I have said before, we have become a nation of sheep, 300 million people bent forward at the waist all blowing smoke up the rear end of the person in front of them. Ghouls blindly supporting manufactured wars that are killing and maiming their own sons and daughters. Obscenely wealthy people working tirelessly to further feather their own befouled nests. Grab your ass with both hands Howie, let go of the keyboard for a while, your ghoul friends are already brainwashed and need no further input from you..."

There are a number of fat, old, rich white men who have specialized in the wholesale spread of fear, hate, poison and discontent throughout this country for the last thirty or so years; men I wished like hell I could engage in a one-on-one cage match. Jerry Falwell was one of them. As a staunch athiest, I would pretend in a Hell so long as I knew this jackass was gonna spend a considerable chunk of eternity boiling his lily-white ass in the Great French Fry Bin Down Below.

Falwell was a con man, a snake, a liar, and a worthless human being. I feel schadenfreude at his passing, nothing more.

They say it's wrong to speak ill of the dead, but in this case there's nothing else to say. Falwell was an enemy of freedom, an agent of intolerance, and a contemptible man all round.

I'm not going to celebrate his death, but neither am I sorry that he's gone.

Over the last decade or so, he and his followers in the religious right made no apologies about blurring the lines separating church and state. And now you've got people trying to introduce pseudo-science into the curriculum and a government that apparently thought a middle east war would be a pushover since God was obviously on our side."

...at the death of Brother Jerry. You have the heart of a true follower of The Way.

In a jar. On your desk. :D

117. Here's a fine story you may recall...
"1994-1995: Falwell is criticized for using his “Old Time Gospel Hour” to hawk a scurrilous video called “The Clinton Chronicles” that makes a number of unsubstantiated charges against President Bill Clinton — among them that he is a drug addict and that he arranged the murders of political enemies in Arkansas. Despite claims he had no ties to the project, evidence surfaced that Falwell helped bankroll the venture with $200,000 paid to a group called Citizens for Honest Government (CHG). CHG’s Pat Matrisciana later admitted that Falwell and he staged an infomercial interview promoting the video in which a silhouetted reporter said his life was in danger for investigating Clinton. (Matrisciana himself posed as the reporter.) “That was Jerry’s idea to do that,” Matrisciana recalled. “He thought that would be dramatic"

--It was a very entertaining motion picture. I never really understood what all the fuss was about.

Well, that's one less religious, extremist, racist, bigotted pile of filth. Next Please.

......

I wonder if he made God enough money so he could get into Heaven.

......

I think he earned his way in just by exposing the horrible truth about that one teletubby.
