The Las Vegas "death ray"

Las Vegas has a new hot spot — but it's not a nightclub.

Guests at the new Vdara Hotel & Spa have complained that the glass skyscraper can magnify and reflect the sun's rays onto an area of the pool at temperatures hot enough to singe hair or melt plastic drink cups. It's a phenomenon that some hotel employees call the Vdara "death ray," the Las Vegas Review-Journal reported.

Bill Pintas, a Chicago lawyer and businessman, recently told the newspaper that he was sunning himself by the pool Sept. 16 when he became so uncomfortably hot that he had to move.

"I was effectively being cooked," Pintas said. "I started running as fast as I could without looking like a lunatic."

Pintas said that he smelled an odor and realized a bit of his hair had been burned. He sought refuge at the pool's bar area, where he described what happened to hotel employees. "Yes, we call it the death ray," he says they told him.

1. The Las Vegas Review Journal?...
Watch out, MSNBC. You're about to get sued by Righthaven LLC.

6. The building facade looks slightly curved
Should focus the reflected sunlight quite nicely. And it has nothing whatsoever to do with this, nor should any parallels be drawn, so stop saying that:
