Report: Student secretly taped having sex kills self
http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/39419543/ns/us_news-crime_and_courts/

NEW BRUNSWICK, N.J. — A Rutgers University student whose sexual encounters were allegedly secretly taped by two other students and broadcast live on the Internet is believed to have committed suicide, according to authorities and media reports.

The Rutgers freshman, from Ridgewood, N.J., is believed to have jumped off the George Washington Bridge last Thursday, WPIX-TV, The (Newark) Star-Ledger and the New York Daily News reported Wednesday. The victim's car was found nearby with both his cell phone and computer inside, according to WPIX and the Star-Ledger. A body has not been recovered, the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey said.

Two fellow Rutgers freshmen, Dharun Ravi, of Plainsboro, and Molly W. Wei, of Princeton, both 18, have been charged with two counts each of invasion of privacy. According to the Middlesex County prosecutor's office, they secretly placed a camera in the victim's dorm room in Piscataway "to view and transmit a live image" of the student having sex on Sept. 19.

Gawker.com and the Star-Ledger reported Ravi wrote on Sept. 19 on his Twitter page, which has since been deleted: "Roommate asked for the room till midnight. I went into molly's room and turned on my webcam. I saw him making out with a dude. Yay."

it's getting so that my cynicism seems blindly optimistic, compared to what's going on.

5. It took the writer four paragraphs to get the actual issue - gay sex?
How sad.

I doubt the dude killed himself because someone posted video of him having sex - he likely did it because of the harassment/embarrassment/shame for being shown doing something gay.

Maybe not, but I wonder, given our current social backwardness, if the guy had been having sex with a girl if he'd have felt the need to kill himself.

14. I've been told by DU experts on suicide that only the "mentally ill" kill themselves.
So obviously, this student was "mentally ill".

Public shaming & harrassment is just coincidental.

29. You don't think shaming and harassment can lead to mental illness?
Yes, indeed - suicide is a sign of mental illness.

mental illness is caused by any number of things, including harassment and bullying. Mental Illness isn't some magical "thing" that just appears ex nihilo.

But perhaps you choose not to accept that.

if that's not your point, then I didn't get it, because then you obviously didn't write clearly what your point was.

So what is your point?

time makes "mental illness" meaningless.

any self-destructive reaction to adversity = "mental illness".

did this student suddenly become "mentally ill" over this video? it's like a switch that flips on at any humiliation, altering "brain chemistry" in one lightning stroke?

35. mental illness is not a solely organic problem, nor is it a lifelong issue existing at 100% all time
Edited on Wed Sep-29-10 04:08 PM by Rabrrrrrr
But, if you prefer to think that people who commit suicide are whatever it is you think they are, then go right ahead. Or prefer to think that mental illness is a purely organic-based brain dysfunction that is real only when it manifests itself at maximum for the entire life of the person suffering from it, then go ahead.

Thankfully, most of the people who actually work and study in the psychological field know what they're doing, and don't need your posts to help them make diagnoses.

Thankfully, others have gone before us to make 'mental illness' far less shameful than it used, and have helped to make the 'mentally ill' far less fearsome, loathsome, and put-awayable than they once were.

Sorry to go on a rant, but I care about deshaming the mentally ill and enhancing the public perception of mental illness and the mentally ill, and it pisses me off when others trivialize it or shame it.

Maybe we're both on the same page but talking across each other, I don't know - I asked you to clarify your point, and instead you went off on a tangent that you also didn't make clear.

Edited on Wed Sep-29-10 04:22 PM by Hannah Bell
anyone who kills themselves is mentally ill.

as was evident from my original post, which included no shaming of the mentally ill whatsoever. mental illness is -- per its name -- "illness".

i reject the proposition that anyone who kills themself is ipso facto "ill".

you're the one who took it off on a tangent.

i'm also opposed to the ever-increasing circle of behaviors being classified as "mental illness". not sure how you feel about that. and behavior is the entire criteria.

18. How incredibly sad. One wonders how the two who did this can
live with themselves after the laughter stops and the realization of what incredible pain they caused starts to really seep in.

It always surprises me what terrible things one human being can do to another.

26. Just as a note, school began in Rutgers less than a month before the incident
And given the age of the people involved, they were all first-year students. So, basically, within three weeks and a half or so, this little miscreant Dharun Ravi had found a confederate (Ms. Wei) and decided to sexually humiliate his roommate.

Incredible.

38. The two confederates went to highschool together
so they already knew each other.

The only good thing so far is that it doesn't seem like anyone knows who the guy is that Tyler was having sex with in that dorm room. So that other guy still has his privacy. Hopefully he is with very supportive friends and family dealing with all of this, and getting ready to sue the life out of these two.
