Any guys here had prostate biopsy?
The Cancer Support forum didn't look to have any info.
I just had one about an hour ago.
Wasn't bad at all.
But I have some questions about aftereffects.
Wonder if mine are typical.
Won't go into yucky' details here, but I'll PM you.
Thanks.

2. Please Tell Us Your Experience With This......
as I have been putting this off now for over 6 months. It would be a public service to all of us old geezers out here that are facing similar fate. How did it come to be that you had to have a biopsy? How did it go? What are the aftereffects? What are the consequences?

You'd be doing a lot of guys out here a real service if you shared that with us.

4. OK, here ya go:
It took about 15 minutes for a 12 point biopsy.
Really painless.
The most 'uncomfortable' part was insertion of the ultrasound probe.
But even that wasn't bad.
It was about 1/2 inch in diameter and well lubed.
Concentrate on relaxing your sphincter.

Doc did a 'block' first, with Zylocaine injected into a nerve into the prostate (as I understand it).
No pain there.
The prostate doesn't have much in the way of pain receptor nerves anyway.

The he took 12 biopsy samples.
He said you'll hear a 'click'.
Yep.
And a little pressure, but NO pain.
Not even a pinprick.

You will have blood in feces, urine, and semen after.
My question is How Much?
The biopsy needles penetrate the lower intestine to get to the prostate.
I've been through 2 pairs of skivvies.
DON'T FART immediately following this procedure.
The outcome may be surprising and messy.
Get on the john first.
:-)

Oh yeah, he put me on a course of antibiotics the day before to cut down on the chance of infection.
You're going THROUGH the bowel to get to the prostate glad after all.
Cyprofloxacn.
The same stuff they gave workers in D.C. during the post 9/11 anthrax scares.
And the nurse gave me a shot in the hip of some other antibiotic prior to the biopsy.
Infection isn't that common, but is the most common possible side effect.

5. At first,it will look like a lot of blood..especially in the urine
provided you aren't on anti-coagulants,it SHOULD diminish in 12 hours. If it continues significantly after that,or if you have a steady ooze of frank blood, call the doc's office.Avoid anything strenuous that might increase intra-abdominal pressure(and I mean ..ahem...anything) until you are certain the bleeding has stopped.
avoid aspirin.

6. About aspirin:
I talked to the doctor's nurse in prep for this.
Told her I was taking 81 mg coated aspirin.
She said 'no problem' and I could keep taking it.

BUT, just prior to the biopsy the doc asked if I was taking any blood thinners.
I told him about the aspirin and he said it was 'probably OK' in such a low dosage.
If I'd known 'probably' I'd have quit a week before.
:-(

7. That much aspirin isn't going to make much of a difference.
I've had multiple surgeries and have been told that each time.

Call your doctor's office in the morning to speak with the nurse or practitioner about your concerns.

3. I recently had a prostate removal and it didn't get all the cancer...
I was the first patient at the VA to have the a new technology used on me. It's being perfected for use in the combat theater. The doctor can operate from a remote location via computer.

8. I'm sorry to hear that, Ghost.
Is this the technology that doesn't require any cutting but is done robotically? I have a friend going to Sloan in NY for this, so I wonder.

I hope you're being treated accordingly to get rid of the rest. I'm a cancer survivor, and there has been remarkable progress made since I went through this.

10. Had the DaVinci robot procedure recently...
happier outcome. Got it super-early.

Got "everything" back, too.

11. Read # 4 from trof....
I've had 2 of them... 12 cores one time and 16 the other time.

Piece of cake... compared to the alternative.

I figure it must be like a mammogram plus Pap smear for a woman..... a pain in the ass, but well worth it.

Found early cancer... had the DaVinci robot prostatectomy... got it all... fast recovery from surgery. Got "everything" back, too, because the nerves were spared.

Guys... don't ever shy away from the rubber-glove exam. Don't ever shy away from the prostate biopsy.
