In view of the Internet, I think NJ and other states need to update
their invasion of privacy laws.

I'm just enraged thinking of the college student who killed himself after his roommate live-streamed images of him with another young man. The roommate faces charges of invasion of privacy that carry a maximum sentence of only 5 years! How can putting personal, sexual images of someone on the internet -- where they will remain, in some form or another, forever -- carry such a light maximum sentence?

1. Light sentence? Five years is a long period of time.
Would you prefer facial branding and blinding?

2. I'd prefer something commensurate with the crime.

Ten years might be sufficient. But when the case involved a death, maybe 20 would be better.

Bullying someone to the point of suicide -- and that is what happened in this case (surely posting those videos and inviting others to watch them live was a form of bullying) -- should carry a greater maximum sentence.

3. Then that should be the crime
However, imagine the various slights that have drove people to suicide over the years. An unkind word, a spurned advance.

Are these people scum? Yes. But they are not murderers. Let them do their five years. As ex cons they won't get to finish their educations. They won't be able to become hairdressers in many states. They can't vote in many states. They will finish their life as second class citizens. Is that enough? Or does every criminal that especially offends you have to remain in prison the rest of their lives or be mutilated? This is your fantasy for society? Or are we a nation of laws?
