1. My father and I have had this ongoing argument. He thinks Obama is "out of touch"
because "he'll never appeal to beer-drinking working class Dad or 'Jersey Shore' housewives."

I told him that those were John McCain voters. The president will never, ever convince these people. They would never vote for a Democrat in the first place unless it's Bill Clinton. There's definitely a tinge of racism to that as well.

Conservatives always telling us blacks to work hard, not be on welfare, 'lift ourselves up by our own bootstraps,' don't rely on others to do for us what we can do for ourselves. You know, the usual conservative dribble.

Well, here it is a fellow comes along with his wife, both of working class backgrounds who did everything conservatives told them to do. And what's the response: "Oh, you're too smart. Too 'uppity'. Out of touch!"

O.K. :puke:

2. Clinton didn't get 50% the first time around
I think it is a myth that any of these folks voted for him. They may claim they did, because Clinton did a good job, but I doubt that they really voted for him. Lots of folks seem to think being "independent" is a great cover for their reality, which is "always voting republican".

3. When I hear someone say they're independent all I see is they're actually republiCONs
who haven't come out yet. One is either a Democrat, a rePubliCON or a LIAR.

6. YEPS.
"Scratch a lie, find a thief".

Dig a little bit deeper into most "independents" and you'll find a chest full of Reaganomics and Ayn Rand groan.

7. pardon?
I am sorry for your misguided perceptions but I have maintained independent status for 30 years and never voted for a republican once.

You have a rather simplistic view of the world.

10. YEP!! Too embarrased to admit to being a Republican. I was an Independent for many years,
but let's be honest: I voted for mostly Democrats, some Greens.

9. I think these are the Regan Democrats who were swayed by the Southern Strategy
Edited on Thu Sep-30-10 07:18 AM by Liberal_Stalwart71
that played well in the South and parts of the Midwest.

It is difficult for any Democrat to have a strong hold on these folks. I don't even think they would have necessarily supported Hillary over John McCain had she won the nomination.

I agree with you, Bill Clinton was only able to siphon off a few of these Reagan Democrats, enough to help him in the election.

Tweety and Joe Scarborough seem to be obsessed with pushing these meme about Bill Clinton being able to "feel our pain," but that's a myth. You're right that Bill didn't do that much better.
