Russia cries fowl over possible Customs Union-related chicken ploy

Russia’s top chicken cop says he’s learned of efforts to slip dreaded chlorinated birds into his country – and he cast a suspicious eye at Russia’s Customs Union partners, Kazakhstan and Belarus.

-snip-

Onishchenko, head of Russia’s meat-imports inspection service, implied that slicksters in Kazakhstan and Belarus were repackaging chlorinated U.S. chicken imports under brand names from their homelands to get around the chlorine ban.

“Attempts are being made to bring chlorine-treated poultry of U.S. producers to Russia, repackaged under producers from third states,” the Russian news service RIA Novosti quoted Onishchenko as saying.

-snip-

Russia banned American imports on January 1 because of a chlorine rinse that U.S. companies used to kill bacteria before shipping the meat overseas. But it recently lifted the ban after agreeing that American producers could use any of three substitute antibacterial rinses – cetylpyridinium chloride, peroxyacetic acid or hydrogen peroxide.

2. I suppose I wouldn't feel worried about a chicken rinsed with hydrogen peroxide as I
use that as a mouth wash and am still alive. Not sure about the other two, and honestly I would want things clearly labeled in any event so that I know up front what I am buying.

3. Yes. it's an archaic practice in US butcher shops, used at least until the 1960's
Unfrozen chicken that began to smell bad was bathed in chlorinated water. The assumption was that chlorine a common disinfectant in the butcher shops of the time was safe to eat.

Horrifying but I can believe that unscrupulous packers would do this today to bend the profit line.

(Well, no butcher had ever read the obituary of Illinois poet Vachel Lindsey).

4. I recently read 'Eating Animals' by Jonathan Safran Foer
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eating_Animals

In it he talks at length about practices like these and many more that are standard in our factory farming industry. I found his point of view persuasive; your mileage may vary. In any case I think it's a worthwhile contribution to the conversation, and recommend it.
