Then force the Rebublicans to vote "no" on a payroll tax holiday that would give wage earners the same benefit they would have gotten had the tax cuts been extended for them. Put it in their paychecks every week.

And for the love of god! Adopt new rules in 2011 that restore the 51 seat majority in the Senate.

1. I agree, let all the tax cuts expire,
However a tax cut for wage earners is the least effective form of economic stimulus. I would rather see a trillion dollar WPA style jobs creation program. It would have a much more positive impact on the economy and help people more than any tax cut. And we can take the other 3.7 trillion and apply it towards our debt.

As far as the 51 seat majority, we already have a way to restore it, but the Dems are refusing to fight. Force a real, live filibuster, take to the bully pulpit and make the obstructionist 'Pugs look like the assholes they are. All it takes on the part of the Dems is the will to fight, but then again, that's always been in short supply.

6. I don't object, but I don't think we can get a WPA passed.
The President can affect the withholding of payroll taxes (if it can't be passed) all by himself. It may not be the best stimulus, but it is a stimulus and is popular with the people who need immediate relief.

Poppy did this, and I remember it. It was the first time I owed income taxes instead of getting a refund.

"The filing of tax returns has been more sluggish than usual in the last few weeks preceding today's deadline - partially because of the withholding tax reduction imposed last March by President Bush.
Because of the change, designed to spur the economy, many people who usually owe money owe even more this year, and some who normally received refunds will owe for the first time."

As to the filibuster, they have no shame, so how will forcing a good old-fashioned filibuster pass legislation?

Better to change the rules, I think. The Republicans will continue to abuse it.

2. They PROMISED the American people that they'd let them expire in order to get them...
...in the first place. Now they're going back on their promise.

4. Seems like the easiest course of action, no?
Which means that the Democrats will move heaven and earth to find the absolute worst way to fuck this up. I'm guessing they'll save the cuts for the wealthy while jettisoning the cuts for everyone else. I have no idea how they could possibly accomplish this worst of all possible outcomes, but somehow they manage to do it time and again.

8. And tax cuts make no difference to people who aren't earning income.
So tax cuts won't help the most destitute of Americans right now anyway.
