"Jumping off the gw bridge sorry."
 I'm sorry too, Tyler. I'm sorry that there are so many ignorant bigots in this world. I'm sorry that a couple assholes thought it would be funny to humiliate you publicly.

I'm sorry that you felt there was no other way out.

I'm sorry that your parents will grow old wondering what might have been.

You didn't deserve any of this.

I'm sorry.

Outrage on campus over student's suicide after sex is broadcast online

"The suicide of a university student — after a recording of him having a sexual encounter with a man was broadcast online — has stirred outrage and remorse on campus from classmates.

"Had he been in bed with a woman, this would not have happened," said Rutgers University student Lauren Felton, 21. "He wouldn't have been outed via an online broadcast and his privacy would have been respected and he might still have his life."

Gay rights groups say Tyler Clementi's suicide make him a national example of a problem they are working to combat: Young people who kill themselves after being tormented over their sexuality...

<snip>

A body found in the Hudson River off New York City was identified on Thursday as Clementi's. New York City medical examiner's spokeswoman Grace Burgess confirmed Clementi committed suicide, saying he drowned and had impact injuries on his torso..."

3. Beyond tragic...
what colleges and universities should do, is have huge posters greeeting the incoming students in the Fall, and they should say the equivalent of:

If you are upset, troubled, scared, weepy, depressed, in shock, feel you don't fit in, feel you can't do the work, or anything else, COME SEE US AT THE UNIVERSITY COUNSELING SERVICE RIGHT AWAY. WE ARE AVAILABLE 24 HOURS A DAY AND WILL HELP YOU. WE PROMISE! PLEASE!!!

27. Rutgers University does have such counseling available
There is a direct phone number but one can get in touch with a counselor by dialing 911 from any campus phone 24/7.

36. So have I...
but rarely is it so absolutely stressed to Freshmen. They sholuld be spoken to the way someone's uncle or aunt should emphatically do so, one on one...I know that sounds extreme and probably unwieldy, but that was done when I was in school, and it made a REAL impression. I also have first degree ties to a University Counseling Center and understand your point. I just believe that it should be stressed #1. As well that it should be.

41. The problems is sadly awareness if often not enough.
Not saying colleges shouldn't do that (and many do) just that in that moment the situation seems so overwhelming the individual isn't looking/wanting counseling/help/talking. They are just looking for an immediate end to the pain.

Even if he saw the posters, believe the "promise" he may still have decided to end it all. It is a sad reality. People who are suicidal often are not rational and thus rational solutions tend not to work.

54. I know that you mean well, but please...
Don't encourage troubled college students to visit their University counseling service. All too often, they will destroy a student's life under the aegis of "trying to help". I lost 15 months of my life because I was foolish enough to think that it was a prudent idea to seek help for a major depressive episode from my University's counseling center. Despite the fact that I wasn't in the least suicidal (just very depressed), they arrived at the erroneous conclusion that I was, and had to be incarcerated "for my own safety".

Again, I know you meant well, but the reality of the situation is that, much like police, university counselors are not your friends, *ever*.

Take care,

Leftist Agitator

Maybe Ravi will get a year and a day, and be out in six months. Wei will get three years probation. There's no way that they get sentenced to the maximum with clean records and the facts of the actual crime here.

52. Filming someone without their knowledge...
...in a sexual situation and broadcasting it publicly? I think the facts of the case are pretty clear. Granted they may not be able to be charged with manslaughter or something like that; still, it is a serious invasion of privacy and especially since it was broadcast publicly, it seems to me there should be more serious charges than simple invasion of privacy.

But IANAL and I don't play one on TV either.

Well there is always shunning. I'm betting these two won't be the most popular students on campus this year.

49. This is tragic
My son's off to his first year away at college and they are goofy and mean and doing anything for a laugh. This is awful for the boy, these are children away from home and flexing all the muscles about everything. My son tells us of mean games he and his roommates play on each other. Taking everything too far. How did we fail as parents/ I have never put up with my kids calling each other"Gay" I say,"Your Uncles are gay, people we love are gay. Love is good." In school they taunt each other. I wish he had reached out for some help. It's heavily loaded. I talked with my son a long time last night about this. People feel a great power from the anonymity of the computer

9. The article quotes what the boy said in a chat room before he died:
Edited on Thu Sep-30-10 03:31 PM by tblue37
"He added at 9:28 a.m. that day, that 'I feel like it was 'look at what a fag my roommate is' ... and the fact that the people he was with saw my making out with a guy as a scandal whereas i mean come on ... he was SPYING ON ME ... do they see nothing wrong with this? unsettling to say the least.'"

10. Is is strange that he at first seemed less upset, or was it that it was later "broadcast?"

Doesn't dilute the horror of the situation either way, but I saw those comments too, and wondered how he went from this quote, and another remarking that his roommate was okay except for being an occasional "@sshole," to suicide?

Was it that he at first perceived that his roommate had only spied on him (and Twittered about it) and became distraught when he realized it had been broadcast publicly?

I was just thrown by the fact that his supposed online comments seemed annoyed and ticked off, but not mortified or despondent. Struck me as strange.

21. I think that was before it was broadcast. The chat room was anonymous
In the chat room he was under a nickname, and the video hadn't been broadcast, so he still felt safe. Once he realized it had been broadcast he panicked, I guess. At his age, he probably felt that his secret had to be protected, and once it was exposed, he thought his life was ruined. You remember that feeling, don't you? As a teenager you feel that everything about yourself is larger than it is, and if anyone finds out even your little secrets, you won't know what to do. His was a big secret for him, and when it was exposed, he didn't know what to do. He panicked, he was terrified, and he reacted by trying to escape it all.

Saddest story I can imagine. I'm so furious at the assholes who thought it was funny or cool or whatever to broadcast him like that. I can't imagine what they were thinking, whether it was a joke, or whether they wanted to ruin his life, or what. The worst part is, I can't even hate them over it, because it isn't their fault that society makes it the way it is. They were still kids, too, just doing what society and Hollywood and half of university culture tells them to do--cut up, play pranks, mock gays, wail on people for being different. Reminds me of Emilio Estevez's story in "The Breakfast Club" of torturing the nerdy kid because his dad wanted him to be like that. Maybe the next day he'd have felt guilty. Maybe not, maybe he's just a selfish piece of crap, who knows?

But society killed that kid. Punish the couple that pulled the trigger, so to speak, but society and its goddamned prejudices and its hate-filled psuedo-moral codes are the gun they shot. How do you punish them? How do you punish anyone and make up for this? All you can do is hope this becomes the big horror story that finally wakes this damn nation up. And I hate to say this because I'll get flamed for it, but is it too much to ask for a little more leadership from our Democratic politicians on this? Isn't it time to stop trying not to piss off voters, and time to start leading America? All of them, all the Democrats--whatever we are doing, it isn't enough yet. Can they, can we, finally get that?

I gotta go. I can't see the screen anymore.

11. it's such a shame
that in 2010 people are still afraid to come out, and that once they are outed they end their lives.

This is what bigotry does to people, and it is disgusting. It's 2010; shouldn't people start accepting others for who they are, and not what their religion supposedly says? It's pathetic and sad. May this young man rest in peace.

Those are just the initial charges. They won't be charged with murder (however just such a charge might be) because it was a suicide. But they can be charged with other things, and the judge can make sure that all the sentences run *consecutively*, which will keep them in prison a looooong time.

They'll plead on the invasion of privacy.

Ravi will get 12 months+1 day, or 13 months - so that it's state rather than county time. He'll be out in four to eight months. Wei will get three years probation.

50. This story has really hit me hard.
I want to wring the necks of those two little fucks who somehow thought this would be funny/cool/whatever. They are the worst kind of scum -- have they lost any semblance of common decency? Have they watched "American Pie" a few too many times and thought that this is now acceptable behavior towards another human being?? The disgust and anger I feel towards them is alarming.

And the sadness about a young man who was violated in such a way and felt the only solution was death is breaking my heart.
