Most racist Free Republic post ever...
Edited on Sat May-19-07 02:37 PM by JohnLocke
I rarely venture over there, but in the first three minutes found this gem...

That is because China is an ancient civilization, and people there have been living on that land for hundreds of thousands of years, exploiting it for their benefit. On the other hand, North America was unpopulated up until about 10,000-15,000 years ago, and even then by savage tribes who did not possess the tools of civilization. They were unable to exploit the land the same way a superior civilization would have. The presence of civilized people on this continent is less than 500 years old.

Guy who posted it is an old-timer, registered since 2002. Wonder how many white hoods he has in his closet?

1. This person's "most civilized country"? Nazi Germany, just before the Battle of Britain.
Edited on Sat May-19-07 02:35 PM by Heaven and Earth
This person clearly equates civilization with domination. Probably a fan of Stalinism and Pol Pot, too.

2. and look at the damage we "civilized" people have done to it.
"savages" at least knew enough to follow the food, and to not plunder an area until life became unsustainable..

even animals know enough to not shit in their own drinking water..

18. only the accident of a few centuries separates civilized from uncivilized
people that crow about their superiority over "savages" aren't that far from "savagery" themselves. The most advanced civilizations many times have very recent histories.

Go back a few thousand years (a short time in human history) and you will find the tables have turned many times. The English (or Anglii) were savage tribes to the Romans.

We are all pots and kettles in that way

6. The Mayan astronomers understood the precession of the equinoxes.
That was long before the Catholic church in Italy tortured Galileo into recanting his proclamation that the the sun is at the center of the solar system. To be fair, I am not sure that the Mayans understood that the earth orbits the earth. Nonetheless, to say that native Americans "did not process the tools of civilization" is ridiculous.

7. The whole of Eurasia has had people on it for a very long time
South and Central America has, IIRC 3 major advanced civilizations before the Spanish came: the Incans, the Mayans, and the Aztecs. And the Spanish I believe destroyed two of them.

North America was more tribal in nature, I believe. And it is true that the natives in North America were not able to work the land like other civilizations were able to.

However, didn't the Aztecs have bronze?

14. They Maya also seem to have had
ritual human sacrifice, and to have depleted their environment pretty severely efore the Spaniards arrived. It's tempting to idealize native culture, but it's also easy to find yourself skating on thin ice.

Edited on Sat May-19-07 03:21 PM by bluestateguy
By his logic, Germany, France, Italy, Spain and Sweeden are more civilized than America, and therefore, we should aspire to being more like those countries.

Native Americans came here 12,000 years ago and were highly civilized and they had tools, plus their societies were advanced. This idiot doesn't even know history.

22. I've been reading Charles Mann's "1491"; I don't know where to start
on what a mega-dumbass our old-time freeper here is.

I will mention (and I've seen this even before this book, but in far less detail) that there's ample evidence to indicate people have been living in the Americans for some 40,000 years, and maybe longer.

27. The Mayans, Aztecs, Incans, and Mound Builders were "savage tribes"? What a Moran
The only real handicap they had was a lack of metal tools and horses. In everything else they were the equals to Old World civilizations. The Classical Maya in particular have always fascinated me.
