What Meg was able to buy with $120 million--and why money in elections must be controlled.

I was just reading a HuffPo article about Meg Whitman's little difficulty, when I came across evidence of what her $120 million had been able to buy before this difficulty arose for her:
Nancy Bolanos, a 31-year-old medical biller in Fresno, is a registered Democrat who said and she's getting annoyed by the governor's race because it's getting "dirty." She said Whitman's stance on immigration has turned her off on the candidate.

"I was leaning towards Meg Whitman until the whole immigration thing came on," Bolanos said.

Katia Castro, who immigrated from Costa Rica 20 years ago, said while she liked Whitman's image overall, she found the revelation about her housekeeper "disgusting."

"Me being a Latina and an immigrant, I guess I'm biased," said Castro, 45, a registered Democrat from Fresno. "But if she was against illegal immigration and she had an illegal immigrant working for her, that's hypocritical."
Notice that both women are registered Democrats, and one is Latina. Yet both were all set to vote for Meg, because they liked her image. That would be the entirely false image paid for with that $120 million.

1. What is the image they are seeing?

Were they that gullible prior to the incident?

Or was it because they related to her as a female?

5. Good questions...I don't get it
Especially if they are registered Democrats.
I do not understand what image would be appealing. She always looks like she's lying to me. (oh, wait...because she likely is?!)

6. One reason the Repubs can win elections is that people vote
without bothering to find out what the candidates stand for. I read one article that quoted some people in CT who voted for Christine O'Donnell. They said they were just pissed at the whole idea of incumbency, so they voted for the outsider, but really didn't know much about her.

Friggin' idiots.

2. There should be some spending limits on how much you can give yourself
If individual donations must have limits, so should self-donations.

3. I agree. Our government offices should not be able to be
essentially purchased by Meg Whitman, Mitt RoOmney, and other rich people just because they want another "fun" thing to do to fluff up their egos, or because they want a position where they can shovel graft to their family and cronies.

4. At one point the ratio of ad quantities was 24 to 1 in Whitman's favor. Many
were negative. The fact that Brown is ahead is amazing, given that we know that advertising and fear works.
