Old but live dog abandoned in Davis trash bin; later euthanized

By Bee Staff

Someone abandoned an old but live dog in a trash bin in Davis, according to the Yolo County Sheriff's Department Animal Services Section.

The dog was euthanized today after UC Davis veterinarians determined the dog was unable to stand and was in great pain, a UCD spokeswoman said.

A maintenance employee at the Danville Apartments in the 1200 block of Kenney Place on Thursday found the dog (left), an elderly gray terrier mix. The female dog, which was unable to stand, had no identification, according to an animal services news release.

An animal service officer transported the dog the UC Davis Veterinary Teaching Hospital for emergency care.

Veterinarians in the hospital's emergency room examined the dog and found that, due to age-related problems, the dog did not have use of its hind legs, was unable to stand and was in great pain. They determined that the most humane thing to do was to euthanize the dog, the UCD spokeswoman said.

Animal Services is asking the public's help in finding the owner of the dog or more information on what happened. Call (530) 668-5287 extension 0 or the Davis Police Department at its non-emergency number (530) 747-5400

2. I can understand that decision... at least she experienced some
compassion and kindness at her end. This story just tore at my core, given how much I treasure every day that I have with my older girl, given her cancer.... I haven't left her and will do everything possible not to leave her for travel or any extended period this past year and I never walk by her without reaching down to hug her and stroke her face.

3. Stories like this break my heart.
It angers me that she was thrown away like she was a piece of trash. :grr: Why not do the humane thing and have her put to sleep peacefully, instead of just throwing her away?

It's a shame they weren't able to save her.. but at least she isn't in pain any longer.

5. I suppose it's possible the owners didn't have the money to put her down, but really I can't
think that was the actual reason behind such an inhumane discarding of a family member like that. As a kid, we had pets we couldn't afford to put down but we just suffered along with them in close company during their last days and hours.

4. Sad news, but ...
At least she died peacefully, in the arms of people who gave a crap, rather than alone in that dumpster.

6. I am angry
That someone abandoned her at this time. Yes, maybe the issue was one of money, but I'm sure there are alternatives to relieve a companion's suffering in a humane way.

8. Damn!
:grr:

We just had to let our old dog go because he was starting to feel pain. We nurtured him and nursed him and kept him going as long as we could. How could anyone do anything less for an old dog that you love?

Did someone pass away and the surviving family cruelly didn't care about the surviving dog?

I can't imagine any other way that any pet of mine would ever end up in that situation.

That poor dog!

I hope she was getting love and attention, and wasn't in pain at the end. I hope they made her last day a good one for her as best as they could.

9. There but for the grace of God go I
not crossing the path of the "person" that put that dog in a trash bin.

She'll cross the Bridge with the next rescuer to go.

11. Some humans are so stupid and cruel
I'll never understand the mentality of anyone who could dump a poor, old animal in the trash. Of course in our society, we toss sick old people in the trash too (ie: in an alleyway a few miles from the emergency room or hospital because they don't have any insurance).

I hope they find the dirtbag who dumped this dog and at least charge them with animal cruelty.
