In 2002 Republicans had a built-in electoral advantage because the most pressing American need was to mount the aggressive conquest of a nation that posed no dire threat to American interests.
Invading Iraq was crazy, ignorant, immoral and pretty much the dumbest and most evil available idea at the time. It might have made sense to do so in 1991 by by 2002 it was a moronic and evil idea.
In 2010 Republicans have a built-in electoral advantage because the most pressing American need is to reduce the federal deficit.
Reducing the federal deficit in 2010-2012 is crazy, ignorant, immoral and pretty much the dumbest and most evil available idea at this point in time. (The federal decifict pretty much IS the economy right.) It might have made sense to do so in 2002 but in 2010 it is a moronic and evil idea.
In both instances the (range of) Democratic Party positions was clearly superior, but not superior enough to draw the sort of bright-line sharp intellectual or moral distinction that should exist on absolute no-brainer issues with dire consequences for the whole world.

1. Agree, and I'm baffled because there are so many ways a terrific argument could be made... |

...for any number of measures that need to be taken.
Returning tax rates for the wealthy to Nixon Era numbers, raising the cap on Social Security, etc., etc.
These are items that would undoubtedly appeal to a significant majority of Americans, even many working class registered Republicans and Independents.
